Welcoming the Chinese New Year means many things. When it comes to fashion, according to ancient tradition from the Northern and Southern dynasties, there is deep significance in new clothing. The Spring Festival is a time for fresh beginnings and change, focusing on removing the old and welcoming the new. There is also a large emphasis on luck and fortune, which pairs with the belief that clothing is auspicious and lends a hand in warding off evil spirits.
With the Chinese Year of the Rat kicking off on January 25, gift yourself with some new clothes to help put you on the path to good fortune. Gucci and Moschino have created collections with the world’s most famous rodent, Mickey Mouse, whilst Chloé and Piaget have both opted for dainty rat illustrations for their limited edition items. If you prefer something a little more subtle, we suggest you peruse the pieces from Burberry and Adidas.

Sarah Mariotti is a Toronto-based writer curious about fashion, spatial design, and ordinary human stories. When she’s not glued to her Kindle or writing about the next best earrings to hit the market, she’s putting on a pair of tortoise shades and ALD x New Balance sneaks and going for a nature walk — because a mentor and editor once told her that good ideas are always on the other side of a walk.
