You don’t have to tell Tom Daley that fashion and sports are increasingly overlapping — he was an early adopter of that fact. Aestheticized athleticism has been soaring for the past few seasons, from F1-inspired clothing lines to blokecore. But for the legendary Olympic diver and FASHION’s April 2025 cover star, this union is nothing new. Tom Daley is well-versed in the worlds of competitions and clothes, and his knack for knitting is only the first layer.
Ditching the playbook of minimalist athleisure, Daley dresses with a sense of daring playfulness. He wore a plunging silver Stella McCartney suit to the 2023 Grammy Awards. He sported a white tuxedo embellished with baby blue bows by Tanner Fletcher at the Gay Times Honours in 2022. To celebrate his first Met Gala appearance in 2021, he stepped out in a custom Moschino suit by Jeremy Scott with side corseting and a cinched silhouette.
He’s embraced cut-outs, off-the-shoulder tops and plunging necklines. He’s experimented with mesh underlays for fashion week and opulent brooches on red carpets. And at the 2024 Olympics, he caught the internet’s attention when he hand-knitted a sweater while sitting in the stands. It seems Daley continuously has clothes on his mind, and his singular eye for style shows it.
“I’ve always been into fashion, but most of the time, I’ve had to wear sports clothes,” he said in his FASHION cover interview. Now retired from his profession at the pool, he’s blossomed in a new era where his love for self-expression takes centre stage. As the host of the upcoming knitting competition show, Game of Wool, a 30-year-old Tom Daley is going into a fresh decade with a renewed focus on fashion.
“I’ve been working with my stylist, James Yardley, for a really long time, and we’ve kind of evolved together. I consider myself a blank canvas, and I wear things that make me happy,” he said. “That’s why I tend to wear a lot of colour — I like to be quite expressive and not wear traditional shapes and textures. Life’s too short to be boring with what you wear.”
Naturally, at his FASHION shoot, he embraced an array of aesthetics, from a chocolate brown Dior suit to Georges Hobeika pastel pink separates — all while decked out in Tiffany & Co. jewels. A growing fixture at fashion front rows, an arbiter of skill in the knitwear space, and a style-lover who’s not afraid to get drenched in a sheer button-up (as he did for our cover shot), Tom Daley dives into fashion headfirst.
Below, we’re revisiting some of his most memorable looks of all time.
