How to Wear Butter Yellow This Fall

Take your cues from Rihanna and play with shape, texture and accessories.

Is there anything more powerful in this world than having Rihanna’s seal of approval? OK, maybe Beyoncé’s, but when it comes to fashion, the Fenty founder’s impact cannot be overstated. So when the RiRi says wear butter yellow for fall 2024, we absolutely need to listen.

On September 16, Rihanna wore a lemony Jacquemus dress for her Fenty Hair launch in London. Well, perhaps dress isn’t quite the right word. Bathrobe may be more like it, as the fluffy ensemble featured an oversized lapel and belted waist. Was it a cheeky reference to her new line of shampoos, conditioners and hair care products you use in the shower? Most likely. Was it also an unexpected ‘fit for the fall? Absolutely.

You see, by this time in September, fashionistas all over the world are embarking on the labour intensive wardrobe transition. Gone are the shorts, linens and pastels that defined the summer, replaced by trousers, suede and shades of merlot.

Now, if you’ve been putting in hours on TikTok, you’ll know that butter yellow was arguably the It colour of the warm weather months, thanks to some viral pieces from Reformation, Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2024 runway and Sabrina Carpenter’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days-coded birthday slip dress. Naturally, we all expected the buttery hue to slowly melt (get it?) into the background once the seasons changed. But if Rihanna isn’t done with it, then neither are we!

Here are our styling tips for how to integrate butter yellow into your fall 2024 outfits.

Embrace classic fall emblems

Plaid for fall? Groundbreaking. While this print may be an autumn staple, when done in yellow it adds a new twist to a classic. As seen during London Fashion Week, a bomber combined with a cargo skirt is never a bad idea. We especially love how this attendee mixed in a few different warm hues for maximum impact.

Make your pops of colour strategic

Yellow may naturally be a loud colour, but it doesn’t always have to scream. Keep it quiet by isolating it into your accessories. As seen on this street style star in Milan, pair your buttered popcorn-coloured purse with a grey button-down and Bermuda shorts. Matching knee-high socks are a much welcomed addition but also not 100 per cent necessary.

Mix in different textures

Yes, yellow may naturally conjure images of warm weather picnics and lounging on the beach, but when you mix it with definitively fall fabrics, it helps transition the colour into the cooler months. We love how this guest at Couture Week Fall 2024 mixed the knit texture of her sweater with this leather matching set. Also, an embellished pair of Mary Janes never hurt anybody.
