Are Anklets Chic? Here’s How to Style One this Summer

There has never been a better time to decorate your ankles.

Summer is in full swing, which means it’s time to hike up your hems and show off those ankles. And, because this isn’t Victorian England, A) that’s allowed, and B) you can adorn said ankle with some very cute jewels. Anklets for women are officially a jewellery collection staple.

If the last time you remember wearing an ankle bracelet was in the fifth grade and it was made out of multicoloured plastic (you know the one), then you’ve been missing out. Anklets have had a major upgrade this year—even Kylie Jenner wore one to the Chanel Paris Couture Week show back in January. Since then, they’ve also been spotted on celebs like Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid and Sydney Sweeney, so you know they’re a big deal.

For many people, the draw can be nostalgic; tapping in to the feeling of freedom and youth many experienced when they first dipped their toes into the world of anklets as a kid. Like the Y2K pop girl trend, along with capris, tube tops, and flip flops, anklets can remind us of a time when we had less stress and wore what we wanted purely because we wanted to.

For others, the allure of anklets might fall within a cultural scope. While the origins, meaning and symbolism behind anklets has evolved as the jewellery has crossed cultures, similar designs have reportedly been found in Persia (now known as Iran) dating back to the end of the second millennium BC. There are also ties to India and Africa. So let’s just say, anklets have been around for a while.

Culture aside, the decision to don an anklet can be purely aesthetic. Anklets for women are the perfect subtle accessory, adding anything from a glimmer of shine to a statement-making bling to exposed ankles. But how do you embrace the trend without looking like you’re at recess?

Below, we’ve rounded up some chic anklet options (and a few editor-approved styling tricks).

Gold Anklets

They’re a classic for a reason. For those whose style leans more quiet luxury than maximalist, accessorizing with a gold anklet adds a subtle touch of glamour to any look. Opt for something simple like this bangle-style anklet from Jenny Bird. Alternatively, glitz it up with a crystal-covered design from Jacquie Aiche or Stone and Strand. You simply can’t go wrong!

Silver Anklets

Gold isn’t your girl? Cool down in the sweltering summer heat with an icy silver anklet instead. This minimal chain from Jewlr is the perfect plus one to any event, while the pearly pendant design by Mademoiselle Jules will fit right in at the beach. Although it’s not labelled as an anklet per se, the Pandora Small-Link Chain can work double duty as a bracelet and chunky anklet.

Statement Anklets

Some of us need more whimsy in our lives, and these statement anklets spark so much joy that you’ll accidentally summon Marie Kondo. This fun pearl anklet from Kara Yoo and beaded piece from Mejuri bring on textures that will spice up an otherwise boring look. To really channel that nostalgic, handmade-at-summer-camp vibe, try a Free People charm anklet with a bonus bandana print.
