Style resolution
As the clock struck midnight on December 31, a close friend of mine declared that 2009 was our “year to shine”—and I couldn’t agree more. While, sure, my New Year’s resolutions include a few of your garden variety promises (vows to workout more, eat out less, and be on time!), how about a few fashion resolutions, too? Here are three that I’ve come up with.
1. Wear all those pieces in my closet that still have the tags attached.
Anyone who’s ever seen my closet knows the abundance of such clothing hanging in it. The funny thing is, most of the items with store tags still attached aren’t impulse purchases that are too regretful to wear out or even laugh at—they’re legitimate, beautiful pieces begging to see the light of day. Bottom line? Next time I reach for my trusty black cardiwrap, I promise to try and wear the black-and-white polka-dot Comme des Garçons for H&M sweater instead—or the red Vince cashmere sweater with lantern sleeves, or….
2. Curb the shoe shopping.
With all the fantastic styles out there (and now on sale!), I have been going nuts, spending all my hard-earned dollars on shoes, shoes, shoes. My most recent purchases include the Dries Van Noten super-colourful, strappy sandals for Fall 2008 and a pair of Stella McCartney maroon patent Mary Janes with a cut-out wedge, which were 70 per cent off at Barneys New York in Los Angeles. And before that, there was a fun pair of Sam Edelman pumps with African-style beading up the front; the Gucci Babouska studded sandals and the cream Miu Miu scalloped leather sandals. Hmm. Sounds like I need to be sure to apply resolution #1 here, too!
3. Wear—really wear—harem pants
I own about three pairs of harem pants that I have, at some point in the last six months, put on, styled, then taken off in a mad, last-minute panic just as I’m supposed to head out the door. New year’s resolution #3, then, is to wear at least one of these pairs of pants (and wear them proudly for a night on the town!) with sky-high heels—might as well fulfill resolution #2 while I’m at it—a blazer and an amazing pair of earrings.
