Polka Dots Are All Grown Up

Take your cues from A$AP Rocky, Cynthia Erivo and the Spring 2025 runways and put on a spotted statement

What do Ariana Grande, Kate Middleton and Minnie Mouse all have in common? Hint: it’s not the same taste in men (Mickey is a one of a kind catch!). This group of icons all sported a polka dot dress at one point, and all have a soft spot for the punctuated print. And now, others are starting to take note.

You see, polka dots haven’t historically been the pattern choice for fashion risk takers, but more for sartorial safety seekers. The print is warm and nostalgic. It’s fun and sweet. It evokes memories of youth and carefree juvenile joy. But hear us out: the polka dot is going through a puberty of sorts. Growing up, maturing and evolving, dots are popping up everywhere, and they’re not telling us to grow up — polka dots are convincing us to grow down and that’s a good thing.

On the Spring 2025 runways, Acne Studios showed delicately spotted tees, hot pants and skirts. At Valentino, creative director Alessandro Michele presented multiple variations of the polka dot dress. And then at Jacquemus, the print took new, more extravagant heights with dramatically draped sleeves, a quarter zip collar and a matching skirt and shoes.

Celebs have also embraced the circles of life. In December, Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo popped in a floor-length Moschino gown on the Out100 red carpet. A month ago, Clairo clothed herself in a 1940s-inspired look for the 2025 Grammy’s. And then in March, A$AP Rocky showed off his soft spot for spots in a patterned coat and pants whilst accompanied by some darling Dalmatians.  If these style icons are any indication, it’s only a matter of time before we add some dots to our day-to-day attire. And during the dark and uncertain times as of late, who amongst us doesn’t want to reconnect with the print and, by default, our childlike state of yonder years.

Polka dots are the pattern of play. They’re abstract but classic, spirited but delicate — a nostalgic reminder of when the world felt simpler and safer. Consider the print a comfort blanket of sorts, albeit a stylish one. A means of soothing ourselves from anxieties and stressors of adulting in 2025.  A sartorial pick-me-up or an ideal add-on to rescue any bland outfit. If Minnie Mouse has taught us one thing, it’s that no day is too dull to embrace the dots.

Below, we’ve hunted down the best polka dot picks to sweeten up your wardrobe this year.

Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana

Consider Dolce and Gabbana as polka dot veterans. After all, they’ve been employing the print since the 90s. Staying true to their vintage roots, these 97 percent cotton shorts are high waisted and reach the mid-thigh — a great length to wear either by themselves or with tights. Walk-man not included.
Zimmerman

Zimmerman

From Zimmerman’s Resort 2025 runway, this button down is beautifully delicate but striking. Featuring a draped necktie, ruffled shoulders, exaggerated puff sleeves and heart buttons, the blouse is a chic take on polka dots. Pair with a black capri pant plus ballet flats and let the blouse speak for itself.
Lisa Says Gah

Lisa Says Gah

Reformation

Reformation

What’s the best addition to a polka dot pattern? Why, a bubble hem of course! In addition to these circular accents, this Reformation dress has a straight neckline, fitted bodice and is made of 98 percent cotton — making it perfect for those pesky transitional days between winter and spring.
For Love & Lemons

For Love & Lemons

Polka dots and lace — a match made in heaven. These capri pants by For Love and Lemon are made up of recycled materials and come in a classic midnight navy, decorated with white dots and lace. Wear with a white graphic crop top for an elevated casual look.
Free People

Free People

Sheer tights are the most tasteful accessory of the season. These dainty Eria Tights by Free People are softly adorned with polka dots on an ivory canvas - ideal to sweeten any ensemble. Pair with a bubble skirt and a kitten heel for a classic but charming feel.
Ganni

Ganni

In search of subtlety? This brown checkered Ganni dress is responsibly made and quietly covered in small black dots. Sleeveless with a round neckline, the suiting dress is fit with a v-lined corset and decorated with two standout pockets.
Khaite

Khaite

If Khaite’s creative take on the polka dot trend is conjuring images of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, you’re not alone. The mix of small and big circles is slightly hypnotic, especially against the snake-effect leather. So consider this a wearable artistic investment that’s worthy of a gallery, or a primo spot in your wardrobe.
COS

COS

COS has given polka dots their Scandinavian seal of approval. The usually demure brand has recently ventured into pattern territory, and this wool coat is the latest in their more decorated offering. Graced with large and abstractly scattered circles, the longline jacket is oversized and double breasted, including a belt and lapels.
