Selena Gomez Teams Up With Puma on a Collection Inspired by Girl Power and Strength

Yesterday Puma began dropping promo videos on Instagram, teasing a brand new collection in collaboration with Selena Gomez. While it’s not the first time the two have worked together–she’s previously partnered with them on two sets of sneakers–this will be her first time designing a full collection for the sportswear label.

It won’t be her first dip into apparel, however. The singer released a ready-to-wear capsule collection with Coach this past summer. But while the previous was filled with soft lilacs and silky slip dresses, this collection has a decidedly different vibe. The ’90s aesthetic is something that’s dominated sportswear in recent years and this line continues to embrace the retro look, featuring everything from colour block leggings to–you heard correctly–a translucent PVC tracksuit.

Despite Gomez’s use of playful materials and silhouettes, the collection remains very wearable, grounded by a muted colour palette consisting mostly of blacks, whites and greys–save for a few pops of deep red.

The collaboration will also feature two pairs of shoes, including a brand new design dubbed the SG Runner–it’s basically a mashup of Puma’s classic court shoes and a traditional running sneaker. The second pair, the DEFY Mid x SG, is a revamped version of the brand’s DEFY sneaker.

The product names feature an SG for obvious reasons (they’re the star’s initials) but they also stand for something else: Strong Girl. In the promotional footage for the new line Gomez is joined by a group of her closest friends and together they read off a list of words that represent the collection: risk-taker, unshakeable, boss and (of course) strong. “I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for my girlfriends,” she said in a statement.

We love the message of strength in Gomez’s collection and it’s something the star has continued to display over the course of her career, from her health battles with Lupus, to her ability to always remain true to herself. Despite being one of the most followed celebs on Instagram–second only to Christiano Ronaldo–she’s never been afraid to take time away from the platform and focus on her mental health. Acknowledging when you need that time for yourself can sometimes take the most strength of all.

Speaking of social media breaks, Gomez’s Instagram account has remained dark since late September. We hope she continues to take all the time she needs, but in the mean time, it’s nice to see the star back on our Insta feeds, looking happy, strong and surrounded by friends.

The collection is set to drop on December 12th.
