Jasmine Sanders AKA Golden Barbie Talks About Her Met Gala Debut
Sanders and five other stars wore H&M ahead of the brand's Gala Collection reveal
Social media star Jasmine Sanders (@Golden_Barbie) is one of the most beautiful women you’ll ever see. Full-stop. Her scary blue eyes and wavy blonde curls gave her the childhood nickname “Golden Barbie” and that moniker came in handy as she launched her social media persona. But in addition to being pals with the Kardashian and Jenners, (Sanders famously appeared in Kylie Jenner’s Glosses campaign video) and being damn beautiful, she is now a member of the elite Met Gala club. For her Met debut, Sanders wore a custom H&M gown.
The off-shoulder, floor length gown in burnished gold lame looked almost-plastic and was stunning for being not what you’d expect from Sanders. Its volume gave the dress an old-Hollywood vibe but the shiny texture and thigh-high front slit felt modern and forward.
Sanders’s red carpet appearance comes one-day before the H&M Gala Collection is revealed. It will feature four styles, and goes on sale to the public (U.S. shoppers only!) this morning. As in Met Galas past, Sanders wasn’t the only celeb in H&M. This year’s roster included influencer Luka Sabbat, actresses Kiersey Clemons, Olivia Munn and Lilli Reinhart as well as model Alek Wek. Before the party started, Sanders took a few minutes to tell FASHION about getting ready for the gala and what her summer fashion staples are going to be.
FASHION: Have you been to the Met Gala before?
Jasmine Sanders: This is my first year attending the Met Gala and a dream come true, of course I can’t wait to see all of the fashion and the different ways the designers interpret the theme.
You are wearing a custom H&M dress. Did you provide any fashion direction on what you would like to wear to the MET Gala?
H&M was really great at making sure the look was made just for me meaning they considered my thoughts and feelings every step of the way.
In 2010 you said you hoped young girls would say they want to be like you when they grow up. I assume that you’ve heard that by now, right? What does that feel like?
Hearing young girls say they want to be like me really warms my heart. It makes me feel like that I’ve worked hard to follow my dream, maintained my focus, and inspired other people to do the same.
What are three items of clothing you have in high rotation right now
Summer is back and I love paring a cute denim short with a bathing suit. I’m looking forward to doing more fun activities summer and can’t go wrong with a pair of Vans sneakers. When it’s time for a night out, I love rocking a pair of thigh high boots.
For something like the Met Gala, does a makeup artist go with you? Or are you doing your own touch-ups in the washroom?
My make up artist will be with me every step of the way until I make it to the carpet then I’m on my own for the evening.
What happens when you are out and someone is wearing the same outfit as you?
I make sure that someone knows they have great style.
After the MET, will you after-party or call it a night?
This is my first time going so hopefully I have enough stamina to celebrate with a night out.
