Dream collaborations
From the upcoming Versace for H&M collaboration to Danier’s ongoing Canadian-on-Canadian capsule collections with the likes of Mark Fast, Greta Constantine and FASHION contributor George Antonopoulos, high-low team ups are continuing to bring luxury designs to the masses. We haven’t had enough. In fact, we vote for more! Here are four mega-designers and Canadian stores that we think should get together and jump on the bandwagon post-haste.
Here are the 4 team ups we’re dreaming of »
Joe Fresh has earned a place in our hearts for its universally flattering pieces—this season it’s tennis whites, ruffled skirts and prepster pastels—that are subdued, but stylish; covetable but not costly. A team-up with Pringle of Scotland would bring the brand both luxe textiles and label cachet (perhaps a campaign starring Pringle favourite Tilda Swinton?) to put Joe Fresh on even the most brand-conscious shopper’s most-wanted list. Pringle’s sumptuous cashmeres may send prices through the roof, but a girl can dream, can’t she?
This may seem like an odd couple, but think about it: Club Monaco girls already know how to play with exaggerated shapes and sizes, neutrals and simple silhouettes, and the brand is constantly trying to up its cool factor (its Spring 2011 look book starred Lou Doillon and the Virgins’ front man Donald Cumming). Rick Owens already has street cred to spare and is a master of the neutral palette and subversive proportions. He could be just the thing CM needs to bring some downtown edge to the brand. We love Roots for comfy sweats, worn-to-perfection leather bags and all things Canadiana, but sometimes we want a little glamour with our patriotism. Insert Dean and Dan Caten, the boys behind Dsquared. Now based in Milan, the former Torontonians would definitely put a jewel-encrusted, fur-trimmed twist on the Canadian Dream.
Betsey Johnson’s designs and boutiques are so vibrant that we have to wonder why she hasn’t forayed into makeup already. A team up between the cartwheeling designer and the collaboration veterans at M.A.C (in the past they’ve teamed up with feminine favourites like Heatherette, Barbie, Rodarte and French graffiti artist Fafi) would definitely result in eye-catching palettes, jaw-dropping lip colours and the most adorable packaging ever conceived.
