Céline Dion Has Always Been a Fashion Icon

The Canadian singer isn't afraid to take a style risk.

Céline Dion knows “The Power of Love,” and the power of a great three-piece suit. The Canadian icon has been a low-key fashion star for much of her 30-year career, stemming all the way back to her first jaw-dropping Céline Dion fashion moment in the public eye: A wedding gown that would have left even Princess Diana and her 25-foot train in awe. The Canadian singer has been known to subscribe to a “more is more” and “more is better” ethos when it comes to her personal style, always down to don a headpiece, flip a suit jacket inside out or go pants-free, all in the name of fashion.

Ahead of the release of her upcoming documentary I Am: Celine Dion, here’s a look at some of the most memorable Céline Dion fashion moments to date. We can’t wait to see even more looks — and new music — from the inspiring singer in our future.

Arguably the first of many iconic looks to come, a young Dion used her wedding day to late husband René Angélil to show off her love of over-the-top fashion, walking down the aisle in a princess gown by Mirella and Steve Gentile. The dress featured hand-sewn crystals and a whopping 19-foot train, but the real showstopper was a custom headpiece which was reportedly covered in 2,000 Swarovski crystals and had to be sewn onto her head.

In an April 2024 video interview with Vogue, the singer revealed that the headpiece was so heavy, putting so much pressure on Dion’s head, that it cut her, giving her an infection that sent her to the ER after her nuptials.

The backwards Christian Dior suit (1999)

Every celebrity has a look that stands the test of time. An iconique sartorial moment that comes to mind when their name is uttereed. For Cher, it’s anything Bob Mackie. For Madonna, it’s the cone bra. And for Céline Dion, it has to be the infamous white Christian Dior suit.

Worn to the 71st annual Academy Awards, this white suit by John Galliano was worn backwards (ahead of her time!) and topped with a cheeky hat. Worn with black sunnies, the star stood out as a fashion rebel on a carpet full of glitzy gowns. In fact, the look initially landed the singer on some “worst dressed” lists at the time,  but has become a fan — and fashion — fave, proving that when us mere laypeople don’t quite see the vision, Dion always does.

Her Titanic sweatshirt (2016)

This is the look that truly cemented Dion as a modern fashion girlie. After years of popping up on the red carpet in forgettable gowns and never *really* being known for her fashion, the singer stepped out at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, and it was a masterclass in fashion. This marked the true debut of Dion’s working relationship with stylist Law Roach, who first began styling the star (alongside other famous clients like Zendaya) in 2016. The pair pulled a mix of archival, modern and streetwear brands for one of fashion’s biggest weeks, including a Vetements Titanic sweatshirt by Vetements. What a legend.

Over twenty years after Dion turned heads in her topsy-turvy suit on the Oscars red carpet, the singer made another red carpet statement, this time at the Grammy Awards. In what would become her something of a signature silhouette — a deep V-neckline and thigh-high slit — Dion wore a striking emerald green Zuhair Murad gown to the 2017 music event.

The same year, Dion once more turned to her fave silhouette, donning a white gown at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards. Performing “My Heart Will Go On” to celebrate Titanic‘s 20th anniversary, the exaggerated white sleeves on her  Stéphane Rolland dress made the songstress look like a literal angel.

The unmatched Met Gala look (2019)

For the 2019 Met Gala, Dion — styled by Pepe Muñoz  and Sydney Lopez — went BIG, at least in the headpiece department, that is. No stranger to gravity-defying toppers (remember that infamous wedding headpiece?), for the 2019 fashion event celebrating all things camp, Dion donned a silver fringed Oscar de la Renta gown with a feathered headpiece by Noel Stewart. Considering most celebs completely miss when it comes to nailing the annual gala’s ever-elusive theme, Dion’s on-theme look was refreshing, and cemented her as a fashion diva to watch.

The fashion week looks 2.0 (2019)

It’s pretty safe to say at this point that nobody owns Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week like Madame Céline. For her return to the City of Light in 2019, the singer pulled out all the stops. Styled by Muñoz and Lopez, every single look was a masterpiece. From matching bodysuit and tailoring combos to a black leather halter dress and gloves from Schiaparelli, Dion turned out certified lewks. But probably our fave look of the week was her black capri suit with Chanel belt (above), a chic take on Parisian athleisure.

Carrie Bradshaw chic (2020)

Is this Céline Dion or And Just Like That… heroine Carrie Bradshaw? Because the latter could definitely pull this look off. While out and about in New York City in 2020, the “Taking Chances” singer channelled Bradshaw in a pink and red floral full skirt from Oscar de la Renta with white boots and a bouquet of matching roses.

After several years out of the public eye as she privately navigated her diagnosis with Stiff Person Syndrome, Dion returned to the spotlight once again, bringing former stylist Law Roach out of retirement with her. Presenting the award for Album of the Year to Taylor Swift at the 2024 Grammys, Dion embraced quiet luxury, wearing a white Valentino gown with a mustard coat. It was an important night for the superstar and this understated look spoke volumes, presenting Dion as the strong, statuesque, unyielding woman she is.
