If there’s one thing you can depend on Kaiser Karl for, it’s that he’ll always have a running string of colourful commentary on whatever the news du jour is. Being a self-proclaimed royalist himself, Karl Lagerfeld was more than happy to take to the French TV channel French 2 to share his thoughts on everything Jubilee-related, from Kate’s backside to the Queen’s shawl (not Karl-approved, in case you were wondering).

1. “I asked my parents to buy my first television to follow the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II,” he said of how his royal obsession began.

2. “She shows us that she has a bottom just as lovely as her sister’s,” he said about Kate’s Alexander McQueen–covered backside.

3. “Princess Anne dressed like a man; I find this very chic.”

4. “Kate Middleton has a silhouette that makes it easy to be flawless.” Agreed.

5. “The queen does not give into the escalation of emotions. I find this remoteness very elegant.”

6. “The rain gives a sort of poetry that the blazing sun would not. This weather makes the ceremony more surreal.” Karl, always the optimist.

7. “For her part, for what she is, it is difficult to see what other outfit the queen could have worn that would be better,” he said of the queen’s true-to-form Angela Kelly coat and dress ensemble.

8. “It’s surprising in the 21st century, in a modern city like London, to find yourself in a Canaletto painting,” he said, referring to the bustling landscape of a Canaletto Thames scene.

9. “The queen is mysterious but human. Without mystery, it would not do.”

10. “I would have dressed the queen in a cape; it would have been prettier than her shawl.”
