Selena Gomez Sparks Controversy With Album Art for ‘Bad Liar’

Selena Gomez has been on a bit of an Instagram posting spree lately to promote her new single, “Bad Liar.”

For the most part, the photos have been fairly cryptic, with the song title and lyrics scribbled on mirrors and on a girl’s (presumably Selena’s) leg. But on Tuesday, the 24-year-old songstress and executive producer of 13 Reasons Why shared an image that left fans concerned: a picture of herself lying down sullenly while sporting a bandage on her wrist and a yellow hospital bracelet reading “risk.”

Considering Gomez cancelled her Revival tour last year to enter rehab for depression and the side-effects of her lupus diagnosis, many were quick to speculate the “risk” bracelet was given for attempted suicide. However, it seems as though the yellow bracelet was actually a “fall risk” bracelet, that is, a bracelet given to patients who are more susceptible to falling. As per the American Hospital Association’s guidelines, “Yellow is a warning to slow down, pay attention and take special precautions. Nurses review patients all the time to determine if they need extra attention to prevent a fall. Sometimes a person may become weakened during an illness or because of surgery. When a patient has this colored alert wristband, it says that this person needs to be assisted when walking or transferring to help prevent a fall.”

Photographer Petra Collins later confirmed the image was not meant to convey attempted suicide, explaining the picture was taken immediately after Gomez was released from the hospital for lupus.

Still, the image is on theme with Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why (which has just been renewed for a second season), as the show deals with suicide and bullying among teenagers. There is speculation “Bad Liar” may be on the second season’s soundtrack, given the main character, Hannah Baker, is accused of being a “bad liar.”

“Bad Liar” is set to release on May 18th. You can listen to a snippet of the track (which samples Talking Heads’ 1977 classic “Psycho Killer”) below.
