When Beyoncé released Lemonade last year, she not-so-subtly confirmed what the whole world was already speculating: JAY-Z cheated. At midnight, we finally got his response.
JAY-Z’s new album 4:44, streaming exclusively on Tidal, serves fans 10-tracks of brutally honest, deeply personal introspection. But there’s one song in particular that Hov wants us to pay attention to.
“4:44 is a song that I wrote, and it’s the crux of the album, just right in the middle of the album,” Jay Z told iHeartRadio. “And I woke up, literally, at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 AM, to write this song. So it became the title of the album and everything. It’s the title track because it’s such a powerful song, and I just believe one of the best songs I’ve ever written.”
In the explosive title track, JAY-Z explicity addresses his emotional shortcomings in his marriage to Queen Bey.
“I apologize, often womanize / Took for my child to be born to see through a woman’s eyes,” JAY-Z candidly admits in the song’s first verse. “Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles / Took me too long for this song.”
On an unrelated but very important side note: Can you believe Bey and Jay’s twins are being named dropped in hit songs, and we still don’t know their names yet???
It’s not the only reference the rapper makes his children with Beyoncé. Later in the lyrics, the rapper blames his absence in the relationship for the couple’s multiple miscarriages.
“I apologize for all the stillborns / Cause I wasn’t present, your body wouldn’t accept it.”
