Why Adele’s Grammys Acceptance Speech Was a Feminist One

Last night, Adele made Beyoncé cry at the 2017 Grammy Awards.

After picking up back-to-back (to back) awards, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year, Adele gave a tear-filled acceptance speech dedicated to Queen Bey after being announced the recipient of the Album of the Year.

“I can’t possibly accept this award,” said the Grammy-awarding winning artist. “I’m very humbled and very grateful and very gracious, but my artist of my life is Beyoncé.”

“This album to me, the Lemonade album, is just so monumental, Beyoncé, and so well thought out and so beautiful and soul-bearing,” continued Adele. “We all got to see another side to you that you don’t always let us see, and we appreciate that.”

As far as acceptance speech goes during this year’s awards season, we have to say, this one tops our list. Sure, we’ve witnessed many, many inspiring political speeches, but Adele’s love letter to Beyoncé was so genuine and so moving that we couldn’t help but think, yes, the state of the sisterhood is real.

This is quite the monumental moment in pop culture history. When it comes to females supporting other females, people are no longer just talking the talk; they’re walking the walk, too. Last week alone, we’ve already seen more top stars defending each other on social media (see: Pink for Lady Gaga and Nikki Reed for Nina Dobrev). But seeing it happen on live television between two of the biggest female artists of the industry definitely gives us all the feels.

And let’s be real here. Judging from Beyoncé’s reaction on live television, Queen Bey clearly thinks Adele deserved the win. So, to all the Twitter trolls out there, stop pitting these two amazing female artists against each other. This is girl power in true form.
