The approach of winter always seems to bring out one thing on red carpets: the classic Hollywood approach to makeup. That is, deep red lips, thick black lashes and liner, and hair that’s swept into voluminous curls or a simple updo. This weekend, both Anne Hathaway and Julianne Hough graced the red carpet in this timeless manner.

Hathaway, in Washington, D.C., at the 2011 Kennedy Center Honors Artist’s Dinner, looks the definition of black tie. Her makeup is simple: black liner all over and mascara on her top and bottom lashes. The red lipstick is a prime example of knowing what colours suit your skin best—Hathaway’s pale skin tone makes this blue-red shade the best choice, and it shows. She also has the benefit of an extra beauty secret: her fiancé’s presence on the red carpet is likely the reason for her beaming smile. (Oh, did you want to see the ring? We have it here.)

And then there’s Julianne Hough, who looks so retro-perfect at the Trevor Project’s 2011 Trevor Live event that we could easily mistake her for a ‘50s starlet. Her lashes are enhanced with a set of fluffy falsies, but they complement the winged liner she’s wearing—the key to keeping this style classic, not comical. Hough also found a lipstick that works—hers is more cherry red than Hathaway’s, but still sits on the cooler side of the shade spectrum.

So what do you think? Is the old Hollywood look a style you’ll be trying this holiday season? Or is it time to test out a new trend?
