If fashion and beauty are all about self-expression, nail polish is certainly the easiest way to experiment with new trends. Sitting at the top of our “must-try” list for this season is texture: from matte polish to bejeweled decals, it’s all about adding a major commotion to our digits and fueling the fires of individualism.

While nail art fanatics have many a DIY way to add texture to a regular manicure, beauty brands are also on board, debuting multi-dimensional collections like Essie’s Encrusted Treasures and innovative formulas OPI’s Liquid Sand. Meaning there’s an endless array of ways to outfit our digits and regardless of creativity or skill level we all can put a creative spin on our paws.

Of course, infinite options make the textured nail trend an ideal challenge for our Beauty Panel. Who better to show off special styles, new colours and textured techniques?

This week our panelists have a bundle of textured nail polish options to share, proving that bedazzled digits look great on everyone. Michelle Louie of A Lovely Allure maintains that nail appliques beat the hassle that comes with applying (and removing!) glittered nail polish and shows off a golden jeweled Revlon x Marchesa look. Stephanie Lau of Fun Size Beauty Fun Size Beauty shows us to get super glittery nails with minimal effort, achieving texture and dimension with a handful of lacquers. Meanwhile, Emily Chan of This Was Forever has tips on how to score the prettiest DIY caviar mani that will set you back a mere three loonies.

Texture is a big trend when it comes to nail polish for this season. Whether it’s caviar beads or fuzzy coat or chalkboard nails, texture is everywhere. For me, as much as I love trends, I never like to spurge on them. So when I came across this Essence Effect Nails in Candy Buffet, I simply couldn’t pass it up. This product contains multi color 3D pearls that makes you want to touch your nails. It’s also very simple to create. First, apply 2 generous coat of nail polish. Here I’m using Essie Ballet Slippers, which is a very pale pink so it will not draw away from the beads. Then I like to sprinkle the pearls through the filter over my wet nails. After the beads have completely covered my nail, I then press gently onto the pearls to ensure that each piece is stuck on. For better lasting, I have also applied a thin layer of topcoat on the nail tips. And then, you’re 3D nails are done! This is a great trend to try out and it will only merely set you back $3.

This fall I fell in love with AVON’s Opal Top Coat. I might not be a huge fan of glitters or textures manis but this top coat looks absolutely amazing when layered on top of darker nail polishes. It can bring any dark hue to life and totally transform a manicure infusing oomph with bits and pieces of sparkly/shiny flakes. It’s a fun top coat, a nice change from glitter and it has a lovely gel finish.

I never thought I would be into the textured nail polish trend. It seems like most varnish brands are coming out with caviar or glitter or even pearls to adorn our nails, but if you are an old-fashioned girl like me, the most daring nail look you like is glitter.

But then I actually tried a textured polish and decided that it was okay to break away from the same old. What I originally thought I would hate, I ended up loving – Sally Hansen’s Sugar Coats, which is a textured nail polish, giving you that caviar effect. I was absolutely loving Lick-O-Rich from the brand, and then I spotted Essie’s Belugaria from their holiday Encrusted Treasures collection.

Lately, I haven’t been so much a nails person and I will avoid wearing texturized nail polish at all costs… I really dislike the rough feeling on my nails, and I’d much prefer to have them smooth. The farthest I typically will go with textured nail polish is glitter, however I dread taking off the glitter afterwards. I recently discovered an alternative to this… nail stickers! They are becoming more and more popular and they are a fun and easy way to add some bling to your fingers. I’d only particularly use nail stickers for detail and design that cannot be achieved myself (or will just take too long).

I’m in love with the designs from the new Revlon by Marchesa Nail Appliques collection! I currently have Gilded Mosaic on all of my nails, although I do prefer using them as an accent nail. Using nail stickers solely as an accent nail will also prolong the life of your stash of nail stickers! You’d only have to use 2 as opposed to 10 (for both hands). To apply these nail stickers, I stick them on my nail from the base towards the tip, and then press out any lines or wrinkles that may have formed from the curvature of my nail. Then I file the tip of my nail in one direction until I can easily peel off the excess sticker. The result is not always perfect and typically the edges of my nails remain rough from filing. This is why I’d prefer to use nail stickers as an accent nail, and show off your regular polish with a bit of flair!

What I love about glitter nails is that it takes minimal nail art prowess to look textured and three dimensional. Just start with a couple coats of a cream coloured polish. Forget accent nails and glitter ombres, top all your nails off with one clean swipe of concentrated, multi-faceted glitter for a sparkle that is eye-catching and perfectly suitable for the upcoming holiday season.
