We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: statement lip is the perennial trend in all things beauty. A look that works for both day and night, we can see why ladies everywhere are opting for this on-trend lip to up the glam factor day-to-day. While a punchy orange is one of this season’s beauty trends and a fave amongst the A-list, some stars aren’t following the norm and debuting more outrageous lip shades with Rihanna leading the pack. There is no doubt that Riri is a big fan of unusual lipstick shades (her most recent being green!), but many other celebrities are following suit including Joan Smalls who rocked a vibrant purple hue to last week’s Met Gala.

When I want to try out colours that are wilder, I usually have a commitment problem in fear that the colours might not look nice or I may not get enough use out of the lipstick. I then rely on this DIY Vaseline tinted lip balm recipe. I’m always up for anything that’s DIY because aside from being fun, it’s also very wallet friendly. This recipe is great because most the ingredients that are needed are usually around the house of a beauty addict. Plus, it’s just 5 easy steps! Here’s what you’ll need:
- Pigments, eyeshadow or blush colour of your choice. For my example, I’m going to use pigments by MAC - A pot of Vaseline - Candle - Large metal ladle - Small metal spoon for stirring - Some kind of container to store the lip balm, such as contacts container, weekly pills container, or just an empty jar
1: Choose your colors! You can pick one shade of pigment you like or mix it up to a desired shade. 2: Put half a teaspoon of Vaseline and the pigment colour of your choice in the ladle. Hover the ladle over a lit candle (about 3 inches away from the flame) and carefully stir with the small spoon until everything is mixed. 3: Remove ladle from heat. 4: Using your spoon, pour the mixture into your container. Do this this extremely carefully, as the mixture will be very hot! 5: Let it cool in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
Then you’re done your lipstick is complete! What I really like about this formula is that it’s extremely moisturizing since the main ingredient is Vaseline.

This week’s challenge couldn’t have come at a better time! I was invited to attend the Annual Governor General Performing Arts Awards Gala and what better way to showcase statement lips than the red carpet? One of my best friends gifted me this Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in "#7 Fiore” and it is by far one of the most outrageous lipstick I’ve ever had and I am totally in love with it!
Though proper lip preparation is needed to rock really bold statement colours, I suggest exfoliating your lips with a gentle scrub. A simple home treatment of old toothbrush, brown sugar and olive oil will do the trick. Deeply moisturize your lip, let it penetrate and completely wipe it off with a washcloth. Your lipstick won’t stay as long if you have lip balm underneath it.
In order to prevent bleeding and to shape the lips nicely, line your lips perfectly with a nude lipliner before applying your lipstick carefully and generously. As soon as that vibrant colour is set, dial-up that attitude and go ahead, take that selfie!
