ICYMI, Eugenie Bouchard made waves yesterday after posting a photo to Instagram of her freshly quasi-buzzed ‘do. Even though reactions seemed to be pretty polarized, the half-shaved style is nothing new—everyone from Rihanna to Scarlett Johannson has experimented with some form of the look.
Of course actually submitting to the permanency of a razor shows way more commitment than simply getting crafty with bobby pins, which is why if you’ve ever actually considered taking the plunge with this look, you’ve probably had some misgivings. Sure, freshly shorn you’ll look like Alice Dellal, but what about that awkward in-between phase? A grown out crew cut is not the equivalent of a past-its-prime bob—you’re running the risk of developing some serious nineties mushroom head (and not in the cute Leonardo Di Caprio way). Not to mention it’ll only be on one side of your face. Yikes.
So what’s a girl with a penchant for walking on the wild side (but, like, with a safety harness) to do? Thankfully, there are a few tips and tricks you can implement to minimize the pain of the growing out stage. Click through the gallery below for some inspo from the riot girls who have been there, done that.

Embrace the pixie Make peace with the fact that you may have to hop from one dramatic cut to the next—the only way to restore the equilibrium to an asymmetrical style is to even the playing field and make everything the same length. Chances are if you’ve committed to a half-buzz, you’re probably not going to balk at a pixie, so why not continue to build your reputation as hair chameleon? Plus, uber cool girls throughout history have rocked the look, including Jean Seberg and Charlize Theron. Sounds like good company to be in.
