You’ll Be Seeing These Hair Colours Everywhere This Fall
Consider this your sign to try terra-copper, espresso brown, NYC blonde and more.
Why wait for a new year to reinvent yourself when you can switch up your hair colour with the changing of the seasons?
True to the autumnal tones of this time of year, fall 2024 hair colour trends are leaning towards rich browns, punchy reds and blackest blacks — with the exception of one vintage shade single-handedly inspired by Kendall Jenner’s latest hair transformation. (Hint: she’s no longer a brunette!)
Ahead, we break down the top six shades to request at your next hair appointment, with reference photos to be shown to your stylist included.
Inky black

The brooding atmosphere of the autumn and winter months makes them the best time of year to commit to going jet-black. Easy enough for brunettes to take on yet dramatic enough for blondes to make a statement with, this raven hair colour trend allows for maximum shine and sleekness long after you’ve left the salon. With the aid of silky hair glosses and nourishing oils, your hair will look healthier than ever.
And over in Hollywood, this dark and polished dye job is already making its rounds. See: Jenna Ortega’s glossy noir hairdos from the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice press tour, the expensive-looking hairstyle Rihanna debuted at a recent Fenty Hair event and Lady Gaga’s shocking transformation from platinum blonde to midnight black last month on Instagram. No hair colour gives off cool, calm and collected energy like this shade does.
Terra-copper

Remember last fall’s cowgirl copper hair colour trend? Well, this time around, we’ll be taking the copper tones up another notch. While the Wild West-inspired hue appeared more natural in colour, this autumn’s terra-copper trend offers a bolder, punchier alternative — and we have stars like Chappell Roan to thank for its rise in popularity.
“This shade is great for those of you that have pink undertones to your skin because this shade will warm your complexion and make it feel richer,” says hair trend forecaster, Tom Smith, on TikTok. “It can be achieved with permanent colour all over, or you can even test it out with some low commitment technology using a semi-permanent gloss.”
NYC blonde

This is not a drill: Kendall Jenner is a blonde! ICYMI, the supermodel debuted a full head of bright blonde hair last week on Instagram, and it instantly set the pace for blonde hair colour trends to come this fall.
Straying from the rest of the family’s tendency to go platinum, Jenner opted for a lived-in shade with dark roots, dubbed “NYC blonde” by her hair colourist Jenna Perry. According to Vogue, this golden hue, which took two days to achieve, was inspired by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and the ’90s. Ahead of your next hair appointment, send these photos to your stylist if you’re looking for a fall-proof shade of blonde to try.
“On the mood board, we’re the inspo,” writes Perry in the caption of an Instagram post showcasing Jenner’s new look. So true Jenna, so true.
Toasty highlights

To gradually take your hair from your summer shade to something new, highlights are a fun way to test and tease your next major dye job. Whether you’re loving the look of terra-copper or NYC blonde, ask your hairstylist to incorporate hints of your favourite seasonal shades to elevate your natural hair colour without taking things too far.
And to our textured-haired readers, never underestimate the power of protective styles like locs and braids to allow for total creative expression and experimentation with colour by using faux hair. Case in point: #BeautyTok influencer Toni Bravo’s chocolate-meets-copper braids, pictured above.
Espresso brown

While blonde icon Sabrina Carpenter has been singing about “Espresso” all summer long, it’s the brunettes (or, soon to be brunettes) who’ll be using this morning beverage as inspiration for their next trip to the salon. This rich, cool brown shade — as seen on It girls like Kaia Gerber and Camila Morrone — looks ultra-glossy and oh-so-sophisticated heading into autumn.
While it borderlines on being black, this coffee-inspired hue is livened up by the faintest of smoky highlights running throughout for added dimension.
Moody ruby

Intimidated by terra-copper? Approach going red in a more low-key manner by asking your stylist for a moody, ruby shade. For reference, look to Squid Game actress HoYeon Jung and her cola-red hair, dyed by colourist Miriam Park ahead of the Venice Film Festival.
Maintaining dark roots that flow into a pared-back burgundy hue, this colour feels warmer and more natural than, say, a fiery auburn or an out-there cherry red. With the subtlety of brown and the fun of red, you’ll get the best of both worlds with this shade of rouge.
