My friend Liza always has a hair claw on her in case a hot flash strikes. I’ve witnessed her retrieve one during a beauty event dinner and quickly wrap her hair up and off her neck. Made of plastic, these spring loaded clips were especially popular in the 80s, which is why they appeared at Alexander Wang’s F/W 18 show on Saturday night, where power executives of that decade were the theme.
Except that backstage, lead hair stylist Guido Palau referred to them as banana clips and thus, all the reporting that followed continued to cite it as that. That’s when women who recall wearing an actual banana clip in their formative years started to challenge the claim with photos.
And no, they aren’t also known as claw clips, Allure. They are two distinct things. That said, I am totally down with the resurgence of claws, especially given that scrunchies are back.
