Amy Nadine and Kristin Ess are the two talented ladies behind The Beauty Department, a hair and makeup blog that breaks down on-trend looks and posts them as bite-sized tutorials. Based out of Los Angeles, the site has become extremely popular thanks to its adorable graphics, practical advice and the occasional inclusion of a celebrity guest-star within the content.
Amy Nadine, who covers all things makeup for the site, and Kristin Ess, who does everything hair, started The Beauty Department when they realized that easy-to-follow hair and makeup tutorials weren’t getting published elsewhere. They turned to one of their top clients, Lauren Conrad, to help promote the site and, well, the rest is history. If you see a nail art Instagram photo or a hair tutorial on Pinterest, chances are it came from The Beauty Department. So when Amy and Kristin were in Toronto for Unilever’s Beauty and Grooming event we jumped at the chance to see what the two beauty experts keep in their bags. We found camera-shaped iPhone cases, limited-edition wallets and lots and lots of makeup—among many other interesting things. Are you ready to explore?

KRISTIN ESS This Celine bag I got when I was in Paris. I got it for my birthday and I came back [to Los Angeles] and I had never seen it, there was no Celine bag of this sort in the US. I liked it cause it had this silhouette and it kind of looked like a woman’s hip to me. Then later on I looked at it and was like “it kind of looks like the Kool-Aid man too!” But anyway, it was one of the best things. I had actually had a little problem with the zipper sticking at first and I looked for a Celine store, and the only one was in Boca Raton in Florida and New York, so I was like “how am I going do that from Los Angeles?” but I mean that was how hard it was to track that bag down. But now obviously every single person in the world has this bag, but mine’s like the grandma! You can see how torn up this thing is, I literally put it through so much and it doesn’t even stand anymore. You know how it stands up normally? It’s like a hard shell? No, it’s like a joke, it’s so busted up! Sometimes I wanna go look at the number and see what batch it was made in.
