Victoria Beckham Didn’t Want to Sacrifice Performance for Style in Her Collection with Reebok
She’s gone from “the little Gucci dress” to designing high-performance activewear
Victoria Beckham, or The Artist Formerly Known as Posh Spice, has parlayed her career as arguably the most fabulous member of the Spice Girls into a career as a fashion designer—her eponymous brand celebrated its 10th anniversary last year—but one thing we never expected from the one-time wearer of “the little Gucci dress” is, well, activewear.
Earlier this week, Beckham launched her first collection with Reebok, which includes camel sweatpants, cozy turtlenecks and highlighter orange sneakers.
A hardcore athlete, Beckham hits up the gym every day, twice—before and after the school run she does with her kids, Romeo (16), Cruz (13), and Harper (7). (19-year-old Brooklyn left the nest to attend Parsons in New York in 2017, but dropped out after one year.) She says she was primarily interested in creating workout gear without sacrificing anything on the performance front. “I didn’t just want a trainer that looked good, I wanted it to function,” she says. “I expect a lot out of my sportswear.” She tested out every single piece in the collection herself, wearing them at the gym to ensure they were tough enough to withstand her rigorous workout.
Of course, being Posh, the clothing isn’t just sportswear. “I think [the collection] definitely has a strong fashion message behind it and I think it’s very me,” she says. “Yes it’s a sports collaboration but there’s something very fashion about it…There’s not one single piece in this collection that I wouldn’t wear myself.”
As a mom, Beckham says her kids were also a huge inspiration when it came to designs – in particular, her 13-year-old son Cruz. “Every Thursday morning he’s going online and he’s like ‘Mom, Supreme just dropped this exclusive beanie somewhere and I really want it,’” she laughs. Getting a thumbs-up from Cruz was perhaps the greatest accolade bestowed upon the collection.
