Business district, 0; Pacific Centre, 2. That’s right: if you haven’t noticed, Chanel shuttered the doors to its freestanding boutique on the corner of Hastings and Hornby and opened a new, redesigned flagship at Holt Renfrew (737 Dunsmuir St., Vancouver, 604-681-3121, holtrenfrew.com) last month. Designed by New York firm Peter Marino Architect (also known for their work on other designer boutiques, including the Louis Vuitton on London’s Bond Street), the new, 1,880-square-foot shop-in-shop features Chanel’s emblematic colours, with white and beige limestone floors, black furniture, and custom wool and silk rugs--the perfect backdrop, naturally, for showcasing a larger selection of Karl Lagerfeld’s brilliant ready-to-wear and to-die-for watches, bags, and shoes.
