Another fashion ~~week~~ month has come to an end and its latest batch of fall/winter dressing may be the most inspirational yet. While we’re thanking Mother Nature for finally putting an end to the treacherously long winter so we can start wearing the best of Spring 2015, the recent Fall 2015 shows may have us anticipating for next year’s colder season (emphasis on next year).

When there is winter, there is fur. Last year, coats got the main fur action and judging from inside and outside the shows, the perennial fave piece still holds strong in Fall 2015’s trends. And the bigger the coat, the better. Cases in point: Michael Kors, Dior and Sacai stood out from the rest thanks to the colourful swaths, but Louis Vuitton’s white marshmallow of a coat was hands down the winning look of fashion month. Fur also added a sense of allure with collars (ahem, Altuzarra) and head-to-toe fur trimmed looks (think Balenciaga’s furry slippers and Valentino’s embroidered dresses).

And speaking of seduction, re-imagined sex appeal is one of Fall 2015’s biggest trends---whether it was a result of a simple neck scarf at Lemaire, the leather and lace ensembles at Alexander McQueen or the tasteful baring of shoulders and skin at Proenza Schouler.

With the temperature sure to drop in the fall season, layering will no doubt be our best friend. While piling on the blanket scarves and blocking out the winds via ponchos makes for no-brainer, the art of layering is taken to new heights for next season. Gone are the days of applauding those who master the coat-over-sweater-over-dress combo. Fall 2015 is all about teaming strapped dresses over T-shirts or skirts-over-insert-your-choice-of-undergarment ensembles.

While spring favoured the ‘70s, Fall 2015’s decade of choice is 1980s where we saw everything from punk-ish party dresses à la Saint Laurent and Versace to the bright and vivid looks at J.W. Anderson. Meanwhile, red and orange make comebacks, with the addition of yellow to complete the complementary colour wheel. With winter sure to favour the dark shades, a spritz of sunny citrus in your wardrobe will sure to brighten up your day.

When it comes to shoes, boots were the footwear of choice. While we saw Fall 2015 collections favour over-the-knee versions, fashion week guests much preferred hopping from show to show in ankle and knee-length heights. Cowboy boots also made appearances with Western-inspired get-ups coming to light both on and off the runways. And with suede and fringe making for popular spring trends, we have a feeling the two will continue to hold their posts when fall comes around.
