Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone---it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

Fashion week’s latest instalment brought us plenty of new ways to dress, from the simple yet statement-making monochromatic uniform in shades of red, pink and orange at Prabal Gurung and Balmain, to the extravagant accents in feathers, jewels and crystals at Rochas, Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen. Last season’s art trend continued as one of the top Fall 2014 trends, this time going graphic with optical prints at Dries Van Noten, Acne and with artisanal details at Burberry.
Given this winter’s disastrous temperatures, standing out on the street had more to do with your coat then what was piled on underneath as evidenced by the repetition of Prada’s Spring 2014 face coats and Shrimps’ fluffy faux fur numbers. It trended into next season on the runway as a glittery Rodarte parka, a heat-activated Alexander Wang coat and a blanket puffer at Sacai.
With the exception of the dark romance trend (moody florals meets Game of Thrones), the top Fall 2014 trend comprise of those that should be worn with a sense of humour. Unemployment numbers must be on the decline somewhere, right?
