Spring 2017 Trend Report: How to Wear Statement Earrings

When it comes to red carpet dressing, bling is the thing. And judging by the parade of sizeable sparklers swinging from the lobes of A-listers like Charlize Theron, whose Chopard shoulder dusters recently dazzled at the 89th Annual Academy Awards, bigger is definitely better. Singles are still on the scene, too, and Isabelle Huppert’s Repossi diamond ear climber looked like modern art, Oscars-style. But that’s Hollywood—everything shines brighter there.

This spring, designers are giving us a taste of Tinseltown with a bold new line-up of statement earrings to wear IRL. There are pairs, there are singles, but all of them are large and in charge. The takeaway? Tricked-out lobes are the new must-have. Mary Katrantzou’s single stunner—a leafy sculptural branch drenched in electric purple—paired with a strong red lip, is the ultimate spring statement: Nature v. Knockout. At Kenzo, the crystal creations had an otherworldly-quality, discovered from a galaxy far, far, away. Festival-ready chandelier styles said groovy fashion fairy at Delpozo. Embellished with sequins, iridescent Plexiglass cut-outs and Swarovski crystals, the shoulder-length ear cuffs were a crafter’s delight.

Singles mingled at J.W. Anderson with silver bells of all sizes swinging from a lone shoulder duster. Extreme length was also the look at Off-White, where rectangle bars resembling popsicle sticks hung from skinny gold wires. The earrings were so long they actually rested on the model’s chest. Balenciaga opted for oversized 80s-inspired buttons, but the news here was the matchy-match with the striped bow blouse. Quirky yet cool, this twinning look is the latest catnip for street style photogs. At Saint Laurent, it was all about heavy metal with burnished gold singles that looked like armour, and at Rodarte, the artful earrings linked together via a pretty chain dotted with semi-precious gems.

Check out eight unique statement earrings below from the spring 2017 runways, and grab a little hang time with any of these head turners.
