Sophie Grégoire Trudeau Lookbook: Meet designer Caroline Constas

Caroline Constas

What Sophie wore:
For her recent trip to Cuba, Caroline Constas recommended Sophie wear the “Gisele” blouse because it’s  “a bit of an homage to the culture of Cuba and it’s my favourite blouse in the collection,” says Constas. “It has a higher neckline, it’s form fitting and it’s sophisticated.”

Where to buy:
The Resort 2016 collection can be purchased online at Shopbop, Net-a-porter, Intermix and Matches.

Designer bio:
This New York-based designer was raised in Montreal and spent her youth summering in France and Greece. She’s known for her off-the-shoulder statement shirts as well as her tiered and ruffled skirts.

Destiny called:
Constas studied pre-med at Boston University but after she graduated she moved to New York and decided to work in the fashion industry. “I felt it suited my character,” she explains. “My grandmother reminded me recently that when we were taking long flights to Greece I would spend the entire time sketching outfits I wanted to wear when we landed. When I moved to New York I started working with designers to help them launch their collections. I was able to see what worked and what didn’t. Eventually, I enrolled at Parsons to learn the fundamentals of pattern making, design and construction before launching my first capsule collection in Spring 2013.”

Signature style:
“I have always loved off-the-shoulder shirts,” she explains. “There’s a picture of me when I’m eight or nine and I had raided my mom’s closet. I am wearing her white off-the-shoulder blouse, a princess skirt and a western belt.  It’s funny but my style hasn’t really changed since that day. People always ask me if this off-the-shoulder trend will die and I remind them it’s been around since Marie Antoinette. The mix of preppy prints and gingham make it modern. Women love this look because they still feel they are showing something off, but it’s a forgiving silhouette that highlights their body without being too revealing.”
