5 Shoe Trends For Spring

The flat mule isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

With Daylight Savings Time behind us, we can now eagerly await the arrival of summer. And since it’s no secret that shoes are at the top of the guilty pleasure shopping list, we’ve got the five shapes you’ll be seeing in 2018. From dainty embellished heels to velvet for day, the shoe trends for spring are as varied as they are pretty.

VELVET

Models pounded the Valentino catwalk in one of the season’s biggest footwear trends—the velvet pump with bow detailing. At both Dries Van Noten and Versace, we saw strappy pointed stilettos and pumps that were distinctively velvet. A staple of the ‘80s, velvet is making its way back into 2018. Ditch basic black and opt for the plush material in vibrant colour, block heels or patterns instead.

FLAT MULE

The trend that built Gucci shows no sign of dissipating. Classic loafers as mules are simple and polished enough to wear to the office or even with an ankle-length dress. These easy-to-wear slip ons are perfect for your next vacation. Other labels to utilize this open-back shoe silhouette include  Derek Lam and Claudia Li. It seems we will be swapping our heels for this comfortable option for months to come. Thank goodness.

PLATFORMS

I remember watching Soul Train as a kid and seeing people dancing in these thick-bottomed shoes. Despite their chunkiness, the versatile shoes are great for people who might want to add a few inches to their height. At Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma there were bright orange platforms, while Jil Sander showed black pairs with blocks of space cut into the soles. But the most talked about platform—ridiculously high and colourful—was by Mary Katrantzou

EMBELLISHMENT

There is a more-is-more approach to design these days which is where embellishment adds an eye-catching element to any outfit. It’s interesting to see many designers apply crystals minimally along the heels to create a tasteful look. Embellishment was seen at Christopher Kane and in the pearls at Simone Rocha. When you wear a simple jeans-and-white-tee ensemble, bejewelled shoes are your best bet for making a stylish entrance.

FLUFFY DETAILS

Fur details are what you expect to see in the cold months but this spring, don’t be surprised to see furry details on toe-baring sandals. Or if covered up is more your thing, take a look at the Saint Laurent catwalk where models sported knee-high boots covered in bright and colourful furs and feathers!
