The Ultimate Itinerary for a Tranquil Trip to Zurich

In this sophisticated Swiss city, being in vogue means transcending trends and quietly treating yourself. One editor shares her tips for planning the idyllic European escape.

I went to Zurich solo with a terrible sense of direction, a Swiss transit pass and a plan: to uncover the style scene of Switzerland’s largest city. Of course, I knew of its reputation for the finer things (top-tier chocolate, fabulous fromage, quality timepieces). But how did this luxury leaning lifestyle translate to sartorial sensibilities? The answer wasn’t so obvious.

After all, the Swiss financial capital is not exactly a fashion hub. Unlike Paris and Copenhagen, Zurich, though becoming a budding hot spot, has yet to be reduced to an easy-to-recreate aesthetic. Still, there’s a distinct approach to dressing here, defined by an elusive ease that seemingly extends to every aspect of the culture. A feeling of fluidity flows through the city — starting with how it’s constructed.

The centuries-old Limmat River divides the touristy Old Town, while the Swiss Alps frame high rises with an air of ancient opulence. Everywhere you go, there’s a striking symmetry of historic meets modern, and with it comes a palpable reverence for shared responsibilities. Efficient public transit lines zoom around medieval buildings. An advanced recycling system is composed of fine tuned categories. People are reserved, kind and extremely punctual. (I quickly learned that on time is considered late.) And style-wise, outfit overkill is nowhere to be found.

While promenading on the Bahnhofstrasse — Zurich’s world-famous shopping mile — in early fall, I noticed locals adorned with high-end watches, supple leather bags and polished umbrellas. In the up-and-coming Wiedikon foodie district, I saw groups of young professionals sipping natural wine at Sacchi Bar — a popular after-work spot — sporting timeless staples like straight-leg jeans and Loro Piana sweaters. While exploring Zurich West, an industrial artsy area made up of repurposed factories and brick railway arches, I spotted chic gallery hoppers in minimalist trench coats and On running shoes. Across each iconic landmark and emerging neighbourhood, outfits were sensible yet singular.

In the end, I realized that Zurich’s style is much like its travel vibe: luxe, to be sure, but understated and undeniably cool. Here, indulgence and simplicity go hand in hand, resulting in a sophistication that never feels forced. Along with the aforementioned legendary sweets (try the hot chocolate from Chocolaterie Schober, a historic boutique with a must-see riverbank view), this mix of effortlessness and elegance makes the metropolis worth visiting.

From its exclusive shopping scene to its endless local delicacies, this Swiss city makes it easy to spoil yourself. This Zurich itinerary shows you how to do just that on your trip.
