A Guide to Toronto’s Ultimate Winter Escapes

Whether you’re embracing the cold or hiding from it in a robe, these retreats understand the assignment.

After what’s felt like a particularly unrelenting winter for Torontonians, consider this your permission slip to escape, if only for a night. Whether you’re plotting a romantic reset, a bestie getaway or simply craving a change of scenery, these close-to-home retreats (all under two hours from the city) prove you don’t need a passport to feel transported.

Think steamy outdoor pools, contrast circuits, candlelit dinners and cozy rooms that make hitting snooze an Olympic sport. Some spots invite you to embrace winter with snowy trails and ski runs; others are all about dodging the cold from inside a spa robe. Either way, this is your cheat sheet to find some joy—plus, if you haven’t made plans yet, a subtle nudge to turn Valentine’s Day into a full-blown weekend affair. Cozy stays, good food, great spas. Repeat as needed.

Just a 90-minute escape from Toronto, Elora Mill Hotel & Spa is proof that you don’t need a boarding pass to feel worlds away. Dramatically perched above the Grand River, the restored 19th-century mill hits different in winter, when fresh snow softens the village streets and everything feels quieter, moodier and better. Essentially, this place is giving romantic energy with a capital R.

From January through March 2026, the hotel leans into slow-living with its Winter Wellness experience, a weekly rotation of sound healing, guided breathwork, creative workshops and even sourdough making—because cozy hobbies (especially in the winter) are peak hygge. Nights unfold in a candlelit dining room, overlooking the gorge, where seasonal menus spotlight Ontario’s winter harvest.

The main character, though, is the spa’s contrast circuit: a steamy outdoor pool against crisp air, cedar sauna sessions and river views that double as meditation. Add a deep-tissue massage or go glow-mode with the 60-minute Oxygen Infusion Therapy, a high-pressure oxygen facial that drives nutrient-rich serums deep into skin for instant hydration, smoothness and that post-spa luminosity. Low effort, high impact.

Set along the shores of Lake Ontario, Hotel X Toronto doesn’t give typical city hotel energy; it’s more resort mode. Imagine a self-contained wellness playground where you genuinely don’t have to leave. With three restaurants, an on-site café and a packed roster of activities (from rooftop pools to tennis courts), it leans harder into stay-all-day vibes than most properties in the city, perfect for locals (and travellers) craving restoration without sacrificing creature comforts.

Days flow seamlessly here. Perhaps movement in the morning, the spa in the afternoon and a sushi dinner at night. On the 4th floor of the property sits Guerlain Spa, a light-filled sanctuary with 10 lake-view treatment rooms, relaxation lounges and contrast therapy zones designed to reset body and mind. The spa was crowned Canada’s Best Hotel Spa by the World Spa Awards in both 2024 and 2025—and yes, it lives up to the hype. Nearby, a heated indoor-outdoor rooftop pool invites year-round soaking with skyline-meets-lake views that become extra dreamy when winter steam hits cold air.

Wellness extends beyond facials and float time: Registered guests get complimentary access to a seriously legit main gym, plus the option to book indoor tennis or squash at the on-site 10XTO Athletic Club. True to Guerlain’s near-200-year beauty legacy, treatments blend performance with pure sensory escape. Don’t sleep on the Aura Nobile 90-minute facial, a sculpting mix of acupressure and gua sha that oxygenates, lifts and leaves skin glowing long after checkout.

Just about a 45-minute drive (or Go train ride) from Toronto, The Postmark Hotel is an easy escape when you want small-town charm without a full road-trip commitment. Opened in 2024, it’s housed inside a beautifully restored 1914 post office on Main Street. The boutique property blends heritage architecture with a modern, community-first vibe—think thoughtfully designed gathering spaces, rooftop dining and just 55 guest suites for an intimate, insider feel.

With multiple restaurants, rooftop terraces and cozy lounges, it encourages guests and patrons to linger, whether you’re meeting friends for dinner or settling in for a low-key weekend away. It’s the kind of place where mornings start with coffee downstairs, afternoons drift by in the guest lounge or fitness studio and evenings naturally lead upstairs for cocktails and dinner. If you want to explore the strip, don’t sleep on Nutmeg Bakeshop (especially for carb lovers), which is a short walk down the street. The Nutella cruffin is a must-try.

For Valentine’s Day weekend, the hotel is leaning into romance. From Friday to Sunday, Overlea (the rooftop restaurant) will serve a special “Made for Two” prix fixe chef’s tasting menu. Make it a stay with the “Room For Two” add-ons, including discounts for stays spanning three nights or longer, plus optional in-room touches like a dozen roses, housemade chocolates and a bottle of bubbly.

Yorkville’s ultimate luxury hideaway, the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, is where polished city energy meets full-on retreat. Recently earning five-star recognition for both the hotel and spa from Forbes Travel Guide, the property reminds us why Four Seasons has always been the blueprint every hotel looks to. And fun fact, the global luxury empire began right here in Canada, with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts founded in Toronto more than six decades ago.

Start with lunch or a lingering latte at Café Boulud Toronto, then head upstairs to the ninth-floor spa (dubbed Cloud 9 IRL). Spanning more than 30,000 square feet, it’s a serene reset zone complete with an indoor pool, whirlpool, steam room and sleek wellness spaces that make you forget you’re in downtown Toronto. For a standout treatment, book the Traditional Chinese Medicine cupping massage—a cult favourite style of massage among notable wellness insiders like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Justin Bieber. It starts with a Swedish massage before moving into targeted suction therapy to boost circulation and melt tension. Expect a little pressure (and maybe a few temporary marks), but emerge so relaxed you’re basically a puddle (in the best possible way, of course).

This February, the hotel is offering Valentine’s experiences spanning prix-fixe dining, luxe spa treatments and staycation-ready room packages. Perfect for date night, a weekend reset or a thoughtful surprise.

Winter is when Collingwood really shows off. Found in the town’s historic heart, Somewhere Inn—located a two-hour drive from Toronto—is set inside a century-old home which feels tailor-made for cold-weather escapes. Inside, just 10 hygge-coded rooms blend old-world charm with modern polish, complete with restored original flooring, bespoke furniture and moody ensuites that practically beg for a post-adventure soak.

Location-wise, it’s a dream basecamp. You’re a quick drive from both Scandinave Spa and Blue Mountain Resort, making it easy to stack ski runs with thermal circuits (a.k.a. the ultimate winter combo). And if you’d rather stay put, the property’s own sauna and cold plunge have you covered. Back at the inn, the lobby and patio shift with the day: coffee and pastries at sunrise, organic wines by night. It’s also pet-friendly, so snowy walks can include your four-legged plus-one.

Spend your days snowshoeing or exploring the frosted trails at Scenic Caves Nature Adventures, warming up with local pours at Black Bellows Brewing Company, or grabbing cocktails at Low Down.
