New York is many things—frenetic, loud and buzzing with ceaseless energy. Words like “serene” and “relaxing” tend not to apply when you’re describing a typical day in Manhattan—especially if you’re coming off a whirlwind cover shoot. But that all changes once you find yourself inside Aman New York.
Stepping into the luxury hotel chain’s Manhattan outpost feels like an instant exhale. That’s because the space is quiet, grounding and completely removed from the city’s chaos. It all starts with an elevator ride to the 14th floor of the Crown Building, a beaux-arts gem in the heart of Midtown, which takes you to Aman’s double-height lobby. The Jean-Michel Gathy-designed space feels like a sanctuary: The decor is restrained and steeped in Japanese minimalism, fireplaces flicker throughout and ikebana arrangements top the tables. Outside, a year-round terrace lush with Japanese and Canadian maple trees opens up to shimmering city views.

Beyond the lobby and past the cream-coloured hallways, the property’s 83 suites provide breathing room in more ways than one. There’s the square footage (generous) and the fireplace and soaking tub in each room (indulgent). But it’s the well-soundproofed windows that complete Aman’s promise of true relaxation—no matter which suite you find yourself in, you’ll be well protected from the noise and chaos of the city below.

Speaking of relaxation, another jewel in Aman New York’s crown is the over-2,300-square-metre spa. Rather than feeling like an optional add-on, it’s a full-scale wellness hub offering everything from a nearly-20-metre heated indoor pool to infrared saunas and Pilates and meditation classes. The menu of treatments and experiences is vast: acupuncture and contrast therapy as well as the latest in advanced no-downtime treatments like MesoJet (which exfoliates the skin and infuses it with serums using high-pressure microjets) and Fotona 4D (which combines two laser wavelengths to boost collagen from the inside out).

In keeping with Aman’s commitment to cocoon-like privacy, its Spa Houses offer completely individual experiences. Each one consists of either a wood-clad banya-style sauna or a marble-walled hammam steam room plus double treatment rooms and a private terrace complete with hot and cold pools—all of which adds up to an exclusive hush-hush escape.

The dining options have been equally considered. Nama offers traditional washoku cuisine and omakase service inside a ryokan-inspired room with an indoor rock garden and a hinoki-wood counter, while Arva spotlights southern-Italian fare and opens up to a terrace overlooking the tony corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. For a lively nightcap, the Jazz Club blends speakeasy vibes with skilful mixology—the aptly named Tokyo cocktail pairs Japanese whisky with grilled peach and shiso, while the Jena is a refreshing zero-proof mix of honeydew, lime, cucumber and mint.

If the clamour of the Jazz Club gets to be too much, the Wine Library, a private six-person hideaway, is a quiet escape among hundreds of rare bottles. Or, you could always head back to your room for guaranteed serenity—perhaps the ultimate luxury of all.
