{FASHION WEEK SPRING 2009 TORONTO}

By Sarah Casselman

The Greta Constantine Spring 2009 show brought a packed house to Circa nightclub for a glimpse of the duo’s gorge, goddess-inspired gowns. The beefcake male models (think Speedos and less than one percent body fat) are just the icing on this no-cal cake.

Designers Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill got it right again this season. Their signature Grecian gowns (both long and short) graced the runway in strong, bright colours (pink! lime!) and in more subtle sorbet shades like orange and pale blue. FASHION loved the rust mini-dress with oodles of pleats. The guys played with the waistline—everything from empire to drop waists came down the catwalk —which made for a breaking-all-the-rules kind of collection.

The Greta gang collaborated again this season with accessories genius Dandi Maestre. The result? Lots of prehistoric-inspired pieces that explore the organic shapes found in driftwood, bone, shells and horn. My fave were the oversized clutches with bone handles. Wilma Flintstone and Betty Rubble would approve.

Overheard after the show: “They have obviously mastered goddess dressing. Maybe it’s time to incorporate another fabric into the mix”.
