Toronto: Desperately Different

{FASHION WEEK SPRING 2009 TORONTO}

By Sarah Nicole Prickett

Opening the new-this-season Studio at L’Oréal Fashion Week—an intimate space to showcase up-and-coming designers—Katya Revenko presented the Spring 2009 installment of her blossoming brand, Desperately Different.

The audience was small, but enthralled as Revenko gave us a show that was all smoke and mirrors. The former came literally, as fog machines rolled out a misty stratum beneath the models’ heels; the latter arrived in the form of reflective poly/spandex blends and shimmering metallic neutrals. Colours were inspired by water and sky (aqua, lavender, and pearlescent hues prevailed), while shapes were asymmetrically draped and knotted for a sea-goddess effect. Exaggerated jodhpurs, deconstructed leggings (à la Rodarte) and long, cascading skirts strike the right note for spring; on the other hand, if you blink and miss the silver jumpsuit trend, you’ll probably breathe a sigh of relief later. Overall, Revenko’s all-knit collection seems made for forward motion—slinky, softly tailored luxury that’s as easy on the body as it is on the eyes.
