Baby, it’s cold outside. And we mean really cold. Not that scenic kind of “snow globe” cold, where everyone goes ice-skating wearing cable knit sweaters and sips gaily on hot chocolate, like in the Old Navy commercials. Rather, it’s that kind of cold where people curse under their breath when they first step outside, and take a cab to otherwise walkable destinations, spiking their hot chocolates on the sly as a means to survive the day.
Sadly, this kind of cold causes many of us to abandon all concepts style. “Oh? You don’t like this oversized puffer?” In that same vein, a fashion-friend tweeted this week that he was “disregarding trends, [and] embracing turtlenecks.”
This left me baffled. I completely get this stand against down jackets. After all, who wants to walk around looking like the Michelin Man in a sleeping bag? But turtlenecks? Since when are turtlenecks considered to be off-trend?
I’ve been wearing turtlenecks my whole life. In fact, my mother used to dress me in multiple turtlenecks at a time, or as Kanye might say, I’d do “necks on necks on necks”. Today, I like to limit myself to one turtleneck at a time. But I mix, match, and layer to my heart’s content, opting to wear a slim-style turtleneck beneath a boatneck sweater or a wool pinafore.
