All the cool girls from the best 1980s and 1990s movies wore suits. In Heathers it was a colour-coded way of life, and for Cher Horowitz, the power suit was a staple in her amazing technologically advanced closet. Everyone, and we mean everyone, knows her classic yellow plaid mini-skirt blazer combo.
Enter Fall 2012.
The suit made a comeback on the runways. Blazers were modernized (see ya later shoulder pads) and the matching skirt was substituted for tailored pants. The pantsuit no longer evokes a mom-headed-to-the-office feeling but rather, a wannabe-that-girl vibe.
Designers like Prabal Gurung went abstract and Yves Saint Laurent went floral. Prada’s geometric take on the suit has been spotted on magazine covers – like our September issue – and on the streets outside of the fashion week tents.
No matter how it’s styled, matching your blazer to your pants has made a space in fall. Finally, being matchy-matchy isn’t a bad thing. It just means you’re totally on trend. Go graphic, floral or wildly abstract from top to toe for the freshest take on the suit.
