Taylor Swift versus Selena Gomez: Which singer wore midnight-blue best at the 2013 VMAs?
While the MTV VMAs had a line-up of fashionable celebrities in attendance, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez topped our best-dressed list at last night’s award show. Gracing the red carpet in strikingly similar midnight-blue gowns, we instantly wondered if these IRL best friends planned to go matchy-matchy ahead of time. (Please say yes!) At the very least, it’s hard for us to decide which singer wore the colour best.
For Taylor Swift, award shows are all about dancing during performances as they are a reason to get totally glammed up. Channeling 1920s elegance, the pop-country songstress looked stunning in a signature bandage midnight-blue gown by Herve Leger (her second one this summer), complete with sparkling beads on the bodice and a plunging neckline. In the accessories department, Swift paired her outfit with black and blue platform pumps by Prada and statement earrings and bracelets by Lorraine Schwartz, allowing the embellished trimmings on her form-fitting dress take the spotlight. And when she took the the stage for to accept the award for best female video, Swift was also carrying a simple black leather envelope clutch by Smythson. Continuing the Old Hollywood aesthetic, Swift pinned her hair up in a faux bob, dramatic smoky eyes and matching red lips and nails.
Selena Gomez also took a cue from the past with her outfit, though her inspiration was little more recent. Wearing a blue floor-length gown by Atelier Versace from the Fall 2013 collection, Gomez’s look was very much a nod to Elizabeth Hurley’s famous safety pin dress. This VMA look was straight from the runway—Gomez even included the shoes from the show—and the dress featured a thigh high slit held together by sparkling hooked fastenings and a black lace bustier. Gomez accessorized with emerald green statement earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. Though it may have been a risqué outfit, the former Disney star pulled together this outfit in a tasteful manner by keeping her beauty look simple: straight, long hair, deep berry-red lips and matching nails.
