The inaugural St. John’s Fashion Week, held from August 7 to 11, was a blend of tradition and innovation that was punctuated by inclusivity. The week was hosted by award-winning storyteller, Sarain Fox, a familiar face in the Canadian fashion scene. Known for her dynamic presence and passion for Indigenous representation in the arts, Fox brought her energy and expertise to the runway. Recently featured as a guest judge on Canada’s Drag Race, Fox’s involvement was a major highlight of St. John’s Fashion Week.

A spotlight on Indigenous fashion

St. John’s Fashion Week unfolded across three iconic locations, each contributing its unique character to the event. The festivities kicked off at the Emera Innovation Exchange on Signal Hill, where the first two nights showcased an eclectic mix of local designers whose work is redefining fashion on Canada’s east coast. This venue, with its majestic views and modern architecture, provided the perfect backdrop for the cutting-edge designs that graced the runway.

The third night, which turned out to be the crown jewel of St. John’s Fashion Week, was held at The Rooms, a cultural hub that embodies the history and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. This night featured an Indigenous Fashion Night, which not only celebrated the vibrant and diverse cultures of Indigenous peoples but also underscored the importance of representation and inclusion in the fashion industry.

Canadian fashion powerhouse Lesley Hampton, known for her size-inclusive clothing and her role as an Indigenous leader in the arts, delivering a show on Indigenous Fashion Night that left the audience in awe. Her recent collection was a stunning display of creativity and cultural pride that resonated deeply with the audience. Hampton’s participation in the event was particularly significant as her family sat proudly in the front row as she showcased her important work that continues to inspire the next generation of designers. The evening was further elevated by a breathtaking performance from Juno-nominated musician Nimki Osawamick. As Osawamick’s voice filled the room, the acoustics of The Rooms created an atmosphere that was both powerful and intimate, making it an unforgettable moment in the week’s festivities.

The final day of St. John’s Fashion Week was held at the Avalon Mall, a venue that made the event accessible to the broader public. This event was also free of charge, further reflecting the inclusive spirit that defined the week. The Avalon Mall brought the runway to the community, bridging the gap between high fashion and everyday style.

Cove Creations made an impression with its recent collaboration with one of FASHION‘s September cover stars, Brooke Lynn Hytes, bringing a unique flair to the runway, while Stitched by April reimagined the classic little black dress. SALT, a local favourite founded in 2017 by childhood best friends Emily Evans and Lauren Sanders, showcased gender-neutral clothing line that blends the cozy chicness of Muskoka with California’s laid-back Venice Beach vibe. Meanwhile, Kobe R. Designs, a young Canadian designer who is poised to make waves in the fashion industry, captured attention with his collection. Rich in texture, layers and bold hardware, the garments exuded the edginess of New York streetwear, signalling the arrival of a new couture force from the east coast.

The inaugural St. John’s Fashion Week was a resounding success, thanks to CEO Jessica Brown and her team who executed five days of events that not only celebrated fashion, but also elevated the cultural and creative landscape of St. John’s. The seamless flow of events, the diversity of talent, and the enthusiastic reception from the community marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Canadian fashion, with St. John’s now firmly on the map as a hub of creativity and innovation.
