These are the Colours You’ll be Wearing For Spring/Summer 20, According to Pantone
We're in for a colourful season
The Spring/Summer 2020 shows have kicked off in New York this week meaning our eyes will be glued to the runways to spot the trends we’ll be sporting next season. However, the bi-annual fashion week extravaganza isn’t the only authority on upcoming trends, with Pantone releasing its S/S’20 trend report overnight.
Every year, Pantone releases its predictions for the top colour trends for the coming seasons. And its 2020 trend report suggests we’ll be feeling pretty bold in the coming months. Topping the list is Flame Scarlet, a can’t-miss, vibrant red hue, followed by Saffron, Classic Blue and Biscay Green.
According to Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Colour Institute’s executive director, next season’s colours are reflective of the current political and cultural climate we find ourselves in. “Fashion is often an indicator of what is happening in the world and around us. From a colourist standpoint and from a designer standpoint, the pervasiveness of blues are very calming blues and not over-the-top ones. It is more about let’s balance things out. We want to make a statement with the hot colours leading the pack. But at the same time, we understand we need those moments of calm to offset all the turmoil that is happening in the world around us,” she told WWD.
Perhaps most importantly, Eiseman says society is increasingly letting go on gendered colours. “We’re less apt today to talk about, ‘Oh, tha’s a girly colour, female colour or male colour.’ If a colour speaks to you, you love it and it appeals to you – then go for it. Regardless of gender, we shouldn’t be putting labels on colours.”
Here are Pantone’s top 12 colour predictions for S/S’20:
Plus, Eiseman says there are more than a handful of classic hues that will make a resurgence next season including Lark (a brown-green), Navy Blazer (a deep blue), Brilliant White (you get it) and Ash (“a midtown grey”).
