Spotlight: Two Toronto jewellery labels we love

Necklace, $430, and cuff, $455, both by Dannijo. Ring $3,525, by Marco Bicego at Birks. Photography by Carlo Mendoza

WHO: Marco Bicego
WHAT: His decade-old eponymous fine jewellery collection.
WHERE: Exclusively available at Birks stores across Canada (birks.com).
WHY: The pieces blend old-world Italian craftsmanship with Bicego’s modern touch. Look for his signature coil rings and delicate gem and semi-precious-stone pieces.

Do you have a favourite gemstone to work with?
“Absolutely—my favourite stones are tourmalines. I connect with them generally, but especially the green and pink tourmalines. You see the variance of colours…everything is one of a kind.”

How has the jewellery world changed in the past 10 years?
“It’s changed a lot, especially in Italy, which used to be a world leader in jewellery-making. People want to buy jewellery as a brand, not just as a piece of jewellery. They want to have an experience.”

I’ve heard that you love to cook. What’s your signature dish?
“I’m Italian; this is why I’m passionate about cooking. On the weekends, I have time [to do it]. It really relaxes me. Making pasta is my favourite. I have one [signature dish]—bigoli with meat sauce. [Good] food for me is really simple, but high quality. A glass of wine. Finished.”

WHO: Dannijo
WHAT: Sisters Danielle and Jodie Snyder’s line of boho-chic costume jewellery.
WHERE: Exclusively available at select Holt Renfrew stores across Canada (holtrenfrew.com).
WHY: The handmade, vintage-inspired earrings, edgy statement necklaces, stackable cuffs and heavy-hitting layers of chains have a one-of-a-kind quality.

What’s the inspiration behind your spring/summer 2011 collection?
Danielle: “I love Florence + the Machine, so this season we were really inspired by their music and the concept of stars and otherworldly beings. All the girls in the presentation had Marie Antoinette crazy hair, like candy clouds.”
Jodie: “We did lots of soft yellows and peaches. It was really a good juxtaposition of a harder, more warrior feeling with really soft touches…it has this sweet, romantic underlying theme.”

As sisters and business partners, what strengths do you see in each other?
Danielle: “Jodie is really persistent and determined, she’s more the business side.”
Jodie: “Danielle is very creative. Every day she’s like an idea box.”
