How to pull off sequins during the day: 10 glitzy (but not too glitzy) tips from street style stars

For decades, sequins have remained the decorative embellishment of choice for glitz-loving showgirls and Hollywood stars alike. They’ve accompanied copious numbers of actresses down the red carpet, and continue to help young girls around the world achieve the “walking disco ball” look every New Year’s Eve.

That is, until Natalie Portman rocked a sequined minidress to the UCLA Younes & Soraya Nazarian Center for Isreal Studies Gala last week in broad daylight. The actress chose a glimmering look from Dior’s Pre-Fall collection, and turned it into a casual every-day ensemble with minimal accessories and a simple up-do. Therefore, making us question everything we thought we knew about things that sparkle and shine.

Flashback to Spring 2015 runways, where Burberry Prorsum showed off an assortment of oversized sequined skirts, Chanel and Bottega Veneta incorporated subtle sequin designs into classic looks, and Dries Van Noten had models strutting their stuff in sparkly tops of green, pink and purple. Who knew sequins and spring would become BFFs?

Whether you prefer a concentrated dose of shimmer, a sporadic twinkle, or an over-the-top Gatsby-inspired look, step away from the season’s quintessential floral patterns and give your silvery separates a daytime appropriate make-under. Forget about shape The key to pulling off a full-on sequin ensemble mid-day is to opt for a piece that doesn’t show off too much bod. Keep it simple with a loosely fitted t-shirt dress that hits somewhere around the knee.
