Saskatoon: On the hunt for mukluks

Winter is on the verge. The temperature is sliding and the sun no longer peers into my window to greet me in the morning. Saskatchewan winters can be pretty unpredictable and to stay fashionable during this time, when everyone should be hibernating, you need to plan ahead. Mukluks are the perfect way to stay stylish during the colder months (and a great alternative to Uggs).

My search began at The Trading Post Ltd. (226 2nd Ave., South, 306-653-1769), a unique store filled with traditional and modern Canadian gifts and souvenirs. Amidst the sculptures, Aboriginal art and other handmade clothing it carries Fleece Line mukluks ($200). With genuine leather and cozy sheepskin they are like pieces of heaven on your feet and available in tan, grey, black and white.

You’ll also find this hot commodity right in the heart of the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market (Saturdays, 414 Avenue B, South, 306-384-6262, saskatoonfarmersmarket.com). Let your feet guide you through the local fresh produce, crafts, and aroma of baked goods and flowers to Saskatoon Furs. There you will find handmade mukluks with intricate beaded designs sure to dazzle your feet and impress your friends.

I love thunderstorms, rodeos and lying on the beach. I like learning new things, red and green Dino Sours and Broadway shows. I’ve been told I have a slight shopping problem. I disagree. I like Rider roadtrips, snowboarding, acting and a good night of dancing. I’m competitive at Monopoly. Greece has the best sunsets, Austria the best wine. I love New York City! It’s important to be nice. I think auctions are thrilling and backpacking Thailand should be mandatory. I can bake thirty-minute brownies in twenty minutes.
