Prada will Present Their Cruise 2019 Collection in New York

Amongst numerous proclamations that New York Fashion Week is “dead,” (editor’s note: I was there and it seemed pretty alive to me), WWD reports that Prada will holding their Cruise 2019 show, taking place this upcoming May, in New York City. (Prada themselves have not yet made a public announcement.)

Cruise shows tend to be set in far-flung locations. Over the years, Chanel alone has brought editors to Cuba, Dubai, Greece, and Rome to debut their most jet-set collection of the year. Louis Vuitton has announced their 2019 cruise collection will be shown on the French Riviera, and Gucci will present theirs in the pastoral town of Arles, France, the setting for many a painting by Vincent Van Gogh. Chanel and Dior have not yet confirmed the locations of their upcoming cruise presentations.

By bringing their collection to New York, Prada is making a move that many critics might view as retrograde. New York hasn’t been the site of a groundbreaking fashion moment since Raf Simons took the top job at Calvin Klein in 2016; before that, it was Alexander Wang whose first collection debuted in 2007 that displayed the promise of a new generation. Wang just held his last runway show earlier this February, making space for a new guard to take up the creative reins of New York.

Perhaps Prada is attempting to revive the downtown New York cool of the ‘70s – the studded creepers, tarantula sweaters and razor-sharp cat-eye sunglasses of the label’s Spring 2018 collection all seem to channel the icy cool of Blondie’s Debbie Harry.

In any event, we’ll be keeping an eye out once a more specific location is announced
