When I think of pearls, I imagine a single strand worn with a simple shift dress. It’s a look that’s eternally chic, conservative and very Jackie Kennedy.

In some circles, receiving your first smooth strand is a rite of passage. Mine were a Bat Mitzvah gift and my twelve-year-old self was desperate to find any occasion to wear them.

Pearls have remained an occasion piece, rarely worn day-to-day but designers seem to be challenging this traditional outlook with pearl-crusted pieces that make a splash for day or night. From Gucci’s loafers with pearl-clad block heels, to Nicholas Kirkwood’s floating pearl-adorned platforms, designers have displaced the pearl. Daytime denim with creamy round bobbles seen on the street is a signal that pearls are peaking like never before.
