Statement earrings, bib necklaces, stacked rings and jewelled ear cuffs all compete for centre stage on nights out. But pearls? They’re not usually the go-to for party dressing. However this season’s runways beg to differ. Thick twisted strands were spotted at Stella McCartney, multiple south sea treasures dripped from lobes at Balenciaga and full face appliqués at Givenchy didn’t even come close to the stuffy single strings gifted for sweet sixteens or found at the bottom of your grandmother’s jewel box. Clearly, the classic pearl has come out of its shell.
If Givenchy’s cheek, chin and under eye pearls are too adventurous, there are plenty of other stylish ways to wear them this season. Creamy drops dangle from Supply + Demand’s dainty gold bangle, clusters surround around an enormous plum crystal on Gucci’s regal-looking ring and baroque pearls hang from Balenciaga’s modern silver swizzle earrings. There’s no doubt they should be promoted to star player in your jewellery box, too.
