If there was ever an industry known for creating seismic shifts and motivating change at breakneck speed, it’s fashion. Marc Jacobs is renowned as the master of reinvention and Cara Delevigne‘s eyebrows get the play by play on the front page. (In case you missed it, bleached for Givenchy, they were back to their full bushy, brunette glory the next morning at Stella McCartney.) But not all trends swing like a pendulum. Today’s shows proved that even small tweaks and a slow evolution can make clothes and accessories feel fresh and new. Here’s are the top 4 updates to take you from Fall 2014 into Spring 2015:
Last season: Utility This season: Military
Moving away from patch pockets, oversize coats and utility details from fall, Sacai spliced and diced airy lace and pleated plaids with stiff collars, army greens, military trenches and rows of shiny of buttons for an easy update.
Last season: Sixties mod This season: Seventies glam
Short shift dresses and patent knee boots were on everyone’s shopping list for fall. Moving only ten years into the future, Hedi Slimane didn’t entirely ditch the sparkle at Saint Laurent, but instead, paired glittery mini skirts with easy silk blouses, long leather jackets and metallic platforms.

Stella McCartney‘s knit pants practically swept the floor last season. For Spring 2015, she cut her ribbed knit dresses close to the body with swingy, flirty hems that feel right for warmer weather.
Last season: Surface treatment This season: 3D embellishment
A multitude of designers showed shimmery fabrics, scattered sequins and embossed patterns for fall. At yesterday’s Giambattista Valli show, extra interest was added with the help of quivering feather-like appliqués and ropes of thin fringe that swung with each step.
