Balenciaga Fall 2014

Balenciaga Fall 2014

Standing in the rain outside of the Balenciaga show this morning, all I wish I’d worn was a classic trench coat, instead of the soggy denim topper I’d packed instead. It got me thinking about ultimate classics and how certain pieces, beyond the white shirt and the little black dress, have entered that coveted club. While fashion’s frenetic cycle churns out new trends at a breakneck speed, today’s roster of Fall 2014 shows during Paris Fashion Week proved there are pieces that are here to stay and new classics that have become staples to invest in, reappearing season after season.

Which looks were the timeless winners among the hundreds of runway exits today? These are my picks for the 4 new classics that are must-haves for Fall 2014 and beyond:

The white tunic Staying true to the technical prowess and serious luxury quotient of Balenciaga, this collection felt like Alexander Wang‘s most personal spin on the brand since taking the helm. While the fur and exposed zip trimmed parkas were standouts, the simplest look of a long, asymmetric white tunic and expertly tailored black pant stood out most. Chic in any setting, the rise of the tunic isn’t showing any sign of waning. And a shout out to pants for evening---always a sophisticated style (hence, the finale of trouser looks from Wang too).

The pointed flat The pointed flat has taken hold as another staple. Replacing a now tired feeling round-toe ballet slipper, the sharp angles of this shoe elongate the leg making them an instant favourite. Reinterpreted this season with giant metallic outer space-inspired orbs on the toe, Pierre Hardy‘s version for fall is a worthy investment if you have yet to add a pair to your closet.

Leather pants If you don’t yet own leather pants, now is the time to try. On the scene for seasons, every editor has been spotted wearing a pair of these better-than-leggings bottoms at the shows under oversize coats, sweaters and even dresses. Barbara Bui‘s head to toe, second skin black leather look, complete with pants, top and jacket will quench the need for rock chick cravings.

Dark florals Don’t stash your florals til spring. Darkly romantic, designers have been turning to the garden for inspiration in the colder months for some time. Blooms in deep Bordeaux and eggplant shades feel right at home in the cold. At Nina Ricci today, the floral fabrics were spliced with brocades, velvet and lace on evening dresses. Any way you slice it, a fur trimmed shoe and floral frock are most definitely frosty weather fashion friends.
