NYFW diary: Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan, and a ’20s-themed cocktail party at Thom Browne

For those who spend their days leisurely lunching and evenings attending benefit galas, Carolina Herrera’s spring collection has them covered. Aside from the strange fact that Nicki Minaj was front row, the ladylike collection, filled with floor-sweeping gowns (Renee Zellweger couldn’t take her eyes off a silver sequin–embellished white number) and tea-length sheaths, was conservative but classically chic.

And what spring fashion week would be complete without a little tribal inspiration? Donna Karan stepped up to the plate with a nod to the global nomad. To the soundtrack of African drum and base, models took to the runway in naughty and nice ‘50s-style tribal-print skirts paired with mesh, metal, and exposed-zipper bandage tops. Statement-making necklaces formed from layered shards of resin and wood completed the look.

Meanwhile, over at the New York City library, Thom Browne invited guests to watch a ladies-only, ‘20s-themed cocktail party, where models flitted, flapped, and splashed in  silver-sequined mermaid gowns, preppy flapper fringed dresses, men’s blazers, and drop-waist dirndl skirts, drinking faux champagne and dancing merrily to Cole Porter’s “I Hate Men.” While the girls air-kissed and puffed from elegant quellazaires, my attention was on Browne’s more wearable silver-paisley embroidered bomber, colour-blocked cap-toe pumps, sleeveless trenches, and glossy leather briefcase bags.
