How did my Thursday begin?  With substance and a touch of glamour at Michael Kors. Think neo-classics, sculptural details, lean trousers, graphic bareness and lots of golden camel and olive green. (And of course, black—the go-to shade for the chic elite.)
Speaking of which – the seating cards at the show read like a who’s who of the NYC social circuit: Amanda Brooks, Marjorie Gubelmann, Aerin Lauder, Olivia Chantecaille to name a few. Why even Dr. Patricia Wexler, the dream dermo of the Upper East Side, put down her Botox needles long enough to join this social circus.

MK’s new colour wheel: Neon pink, safety orange and acid green.  Loved the furry fluorescent trapper hats paired with matching oversized ribbed knits.
Show soundtrack: “Bizarre Love Triangle” mixed with Coldplay’s “Clocks.”
Recession-proof runway: MK’s fabulously unapologetic shaggy fur coats. So luxe, so luscious…only MK could pull it off without it looking garish or inappropriate.
Best in show for: Optimistic energy.

Skipped up to Oscar de la Renta and passed Barbara Walters on my way in.  Loved the show’s music Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy, Mercy Me.” The room felt calm but spirited as the lyrics rang out “Oh mercy, mercy me. Oh things aren’t what they used to be…where did all the blue skies go?” One has to wonder if Mr. de la Renta was listening to this as he brought his fall ’09 collection to life.  Despite the grey and dreary day outside, he brought the blue skies inside with lovely mixes of sleeveless fur vests, long suede slouchy gloves, colour combos of olive, maroon and gold, bright corals, demure tweed suitings with a few show stopping gowns thrown in for good measure.

Signature looks that still have legs: Oversized bows, wavy satin pleats and floor-grazing fantasy frocks.
The new look: The Park Avenue puffa, a sleeveless vest with controlled volume.  Ms. Walters to Missy Elliott?  Hmm….

3.1 Phillip Lim was loved by all, including Lucy Liu who sat front-and-centre, showing off her glam gams. (You can always tell those who have a car service during fashion week: bare legs, sky-high heels, no coat and every hair in place). Alas, a FASHION girl can dream….

Love it: Lim’s show opener, a tux-inspired vanilla Hendrix coat, antique white silk ruffle blouse, ivory bootleg pants and nude lace driving gloves.
Leave it: The lambskin mini-shorts (unless you have a serious gym membership or ridiculously good genes.)
Music you must buy: Lissy Trullie. The live band at the show was money well spent.

Zoomed over to Tory Burch in Chelsea—the presentation, not the store (though that is on my to do list before I head home.) Burch has her recipe for success down pat—Palm Beach chic mixed with rich boho.  As they say, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. That said, this collection took a harder edge turn for fall, trading in her ballet flats for combat boots and lots of leather.

Back to the tents for more fun and games at Anna Sui. The seat swag sitch is dire this week, but Sui took pity on us all and had a colourful little bag filled with her makeup and fragrance propped up on the chairs.

Flashbulb frenzy: Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen getting cozy with Teen Vogue ed Amy Astley. (Is there another cover in the works?)

Buzz at the tents: the new Magnolia Bakery at 49th and 6th. Red velvet cupcake anyone?
The tent trend to close your eyes and make go away: Men in fur and costume jewelry.  As one editor so delicately put it: just where does he think he is going in that?

Until my next jottings…
