Buh-Bye Big Apple, hello London! The New York Fashion week collections are done for Fall 2013 but the fashion set has already packed up their Goyard and Louis Vuitton luggage and jetted across the pond for the next leg of this month-long sartorial journey. Before we fall in love with all things British–Burberry Prorsum, Christopher Kane, Peter Pilotto–we’ve rounded up the hottest trends from New York Fashion Week Fall 2013. Start your shopping list now.

1. THE NEW BLACK – All-black ensembles are hot for fall, but what’s really making headlines are the details: cutouts, embossed leather, quilting, wool, jersey, fur and tons of unusual texture mixes. Shape also plays a starring role in this noir trend–think softly voluminous shoulders and a curvilinear back, as seen at Vera Wang, The Row and Zac Posen.

2. GEOMETRIC PRINTS – These eye-catching patterns create a unique mosaic effect that lends itself well to simple silhouettes like turtleneck dresses and streamlined tops. At Marc by Marc Jacobs they had a retro vibe, at Derek Lam they were pared-down and graphic and at J. Crew they were bold and preppy. Jeremy Laing took a slightly different approach, embroidering appliqués in cool geometric shapes.

3. EXTREME MINIMALISM – Clean, confident, modern. Who needs embellishment when there’s refined tailoring and sleek shapes to be snapped up next fall? From Narciso Rodriguez to Calvin Klein to Proenza Schouler, it’s clear that couture-like construction is the new lust-have in ready-to-wear. The other part of this modern love story? Fabric experimentation. Take the slick trompe l’oeil tweed pieces at Proenza Schouler–they were actually made of leather woven into panels.

4. RICH COLOUR – Plum, ink, bordeaux, navy and loden¬–¬fall’s colour palette is as full-bodied as an Italian Super Tuscan. Rich new colour combinations like wine and blue are worth a spin come fall. Ralph Lauren cozied up to this luxe look with a Russian-inspired collection filled with poet blouses, vests, decadent outerwear and velvet dresses. Very Anna Karenina.

5. OUTERWEAR – Swap your tried-and-true black coat for something a little more adventurous next fall. May we suggest: Michael Kors’ urban sport anoraks (love the traffic cone orange and black colour combo); Prabal Gurung’s embroidered utilitarian parkas; Tommy Hilfiger’s super chic single breasted winter white delight; Karen Walker’s neon cropped jacket; Victoria Beckham’s mannish checked coat; or Altuzarra’s Cruella de Vil-inspired luxe fur. When it comes to fall’s chill chasers, variety is the mot du jour.
