Milan Fashion Week Spring 2018: Our Most Memorable Moments
Newsflash: Kaia Gerber is very, very pretty.
Milan Fashion Week has come and gone, and even if there was no time to get even one gelato in me, there were no shortages of stimulating fashion moments to be had. Our highlights from Milan Fashion Week:
The Supes
Social channels exploded on Friday when the Original Supermodels (Um, excuse me, where was Linda and Christy?) closed the Versace 20th anniversary tribute collection to her late brother Gianni. It was a jaw dropping moment that brought this intense jolt of star power to fashion month. But who couldn’t love this ‘gram which showed three new guard designers, Anthony Vacarello of Yves Saint Laurent, Alessandro Michele of Gucci and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino standing up and applauding, yes the models, but obviously Donatella for her strength and resolve in the two decades since tragedy befell the house. Can a retirement announcement be far behind? It was one of those moments where you were reminded that fashion is not just about clothes; it’s also a community filled with admiration and mutual support.
Next Generation Casting
The Supers might have dropped the mic on Friday night, but on Saturday, Bottega Veneta’s Thomas Maier grabbed it back. Early in the morning, the fashion flock gathered at dreamy Palazzo Archinto, a former residence turned boarding school to witness a beautiful collection that demonstrated an astute eye for casting. Korean model Hoyeon Jung opened the show, interspersed with beautiful men and women of varied ethnic backgrounds as well as buzzy next generation stars like Kaia and Presley Gerber, Bella and Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner (mamma Kris sat nearby) and Emily Ratajakowski. Actress Lauren Hutton sat front row. No there wasn’t a curve girl in sight, but the casting alone felt of the moment and even forward.
Breathtaking Venue
American artist Rachel Hayes designed the enormous canopies suspended over Missoni. This 20th collection from Angela Missoni was held in a raw event space with beautiful greenery. Each seat had a bottle of water since temperatures were in the mid-20s. It felt more like a wedding about to take place in an open air Japanese-style garden: bright, airy, colourful and joyful like a party waiting to happen. Heavy on Italian socialites, Missoni’s stretchy sexy stripes scream weekend getaway by the sea. This is clearly a brand that lives its aesthetic. Aspiration at its best.
Revolving Door of Editors
Last season was Alexandra Shulman‘s final as editor-in-chief of British Vogue, so it was fun to watch newly minted Edward Enninful officially became the editor about town. He was everywhere, hugging this influencer here and showing the afterparty hangs with the supers after Versace. Suffice to say, his predecessor barely had an Instagram presence. British Vogue‘s new Fashion Director, Venetia Scott, actually smiled during the Agnona show and slipped backstage afterwards. And while the crowds departed Bottega Veneta, I watched as the new Elle US editor Nina Garcia was tapped on the shoulder by a publicist and taken to meet presumably Thomas Maier. Publisher/EIC Stella Bugbee of The Cut (i’ve read this profile on her cooking habits about 100 times #inawe) sat at Ferragamo in a brand new pair of Birkenstocks. There’s a new sheriff in town, and there are a lot of them.
